Favorite Powder for 45-70 Marlin

Post by Razor »

Just ordered a guide gun, and will probably put 100 rounds of 300 jacketed HP through it, to smooth up the barrel. What would be a good powder? I have alittle bet of AA223 and 5744, but not much. What are some of the powders you like in the marlin?

I use a lot of H322 for full power loads with heavy bullets.

I use three powders. H-4895 for mid-power loads, and H-4198 for full power loads. (both Hodgdon's)

The most fun and useful loads around here though are with Unique and cast bullets. 15.5 grains under a 405g lead bullet, or 16.5g under a 365g cast gc ranch dog are both potent deer medicine in upper Michigan here. Also, tack driving accurate in my 1895CB.

In my 1895 I've gotten fantastic accuracy with Varget and 350 gr Hornady JFPs.

I have used IMR3031 a little. So far I haven't loaded much for my Guide Gun.

31-35gr H4198 w/405gr. cast
25gr 2400 w/300gr cast
Both are plinking loads and very easy on the shoulder, but will down about anything in N.America. The load w/2400 is my plinking load that I shoot a lot of in my BFR.

IMR 4198 has taken care of most of my .45-70 smokeless powder needs.

54 gr. H322 under the 300 gr. jacketed bullets duplicates the factory 300 gr. loads.

Yep, for factory duplication loads with the 300 JHP's, I use IMR-3031. Works very well.

IMR 3031 + 300 JHP is what I load in my Marlin cowboy .45-70.

H-322 for short-barrelled guide guns. 400 gr + bullets

22" tubes on up --- H-335

56 gr of H-335 under a LaserCast 400 gr. bullet gives me nearly 1900 fps from my '86 Extra Light.

From mild to wild 3031. That includes light to heavy bullets.

However, I have been playing around with 11grs of Unique with a 300gr cast for a FUN plinker!

I can't believe nobody mentioned RL7 yet! That's about all I use for 350's on up. 300-350 gr. cast bullets get thrown a lot with Unique or 5744.

I used lots of Rl-7, years ago, but i find I get better consistency with the H-335. Go figger...

I prefer H322. Having written that, for those of you who prefer IMR 3031, I have an unopened 8-pound container of 3031 that I want to swap - swap, not sell - for 8 pounds of H322.
