Canon City is a nice place. It's not too far from the Arkansas river. I took my nice rainbow's out of there.

Something about the clothes don't look right to me, but I really like those double set triggers on that Sharps. I wonder what caliber it is.

Looks to me like he walked in off the street and dressed for the photo. Sure is anice Sharps though.

I'd have to say this is strictly a posed photo; he just doesn't look comfortable in those clothes. Boy, that is really a nice Sharps. :P

And you can bet there ain't no game behind that tree, nor no fish in that crick behind him...

Only thing in the pic that the guy came in with is his mustache...

Studio photography as a high art. I love it. Kinda reminds me of my dad's "christening" picture, taken when he was an infant. For all the world he looks to be in a cathedral, and not in a basement studio under a shirt factory in NYC ;)

Nothin real about it, but well done.

I disagree with a bunch of you. 1st, in those days what picture wasnt posed? Common people didnt own a camera. Virtitaly every camera was owned by a "professional" photographer. Those buckskins fit him so well they were made for just him! Just how many sets of different sizes do you think a photographer could keep in stock? Who is to say he was or is trying to be a buffalo hunter? Listen up! Hollywood has always showed buffallo hunters to be the stinkyest retarded looking bums of the west, no? Okay, lets talk about guys that actualy were said to be buffalo hunters: Bill Cody. Bat Masterson. Bill hickock, and Wyatt Earp. General Custer. I find it interesting that EVERY ONE I just named I read were snappy, eligant dressers!!!

Posed studio photo. Very nice gun. But back in the day it would have been an inexpensive prop for the photographer to have in his studio.

Here is a impromto picture of my dad many years ago. No doubt it was taken by one of his brothers after a deer hunt just before they came home. I remember dads car in about 1945 or 1946, just after the war when all my uncles and him all got together after the war. Dad is wearing a deer skin leather shirt. I remember that shirt yet in the 60s when he gave it to my brother in law. Why is it so hard to belive that other picture authentic, just because they got it done by a professional when no common person owned a camera? Maybe I am just a uncureable romantic!

My first impression was that the guy was too clean for his clothes. But...if he was spending money on a pictograph, it makes perfect sense that he'd spring for a bath, haircut and shave as well.

Generaly speaking, I would guess that most of those camp hunting pictures we see date to around 1905 up.
I dont think many private people had cameras in the 1890s yet. I have quite a few of our family pictures that seem to start around 1915. Usualy you need a big magnifing glass to see much. My wife just bought a scanner and printer a couple days ago and I am going to start storeing old pictures on my computer again. Here is a picture I do have on my computer that I probley showed before. It is of my great, great grandparents. He was a civil war vet, started out in wisconsins iron brigade about may of 1862. Going from that, what year would you think this picture was made? I think he was born about 1838.

Bill ...I'd figure your grandparents were photographed about 1895. She has a lot of the "Gibson Girl" look in that photo with the hat and hairdo.

The Gent looks pretty much dressed up in late Victorian era duds.

For that picture to be made in 1895 he would have to be about 57 years old. I have a picture of my mom sitting on her lap taken about 1916. She looks 200 years old on it! I would guess him to be about 28 years old on this one, makeing it about 1866? I assume they got married right after the war. I have a gold waltham watch he gave her then, dont have my notes handy on it but I checked and its serial # is dated durring the war. Here are another couple old pictures of a different set of great granparents. They are worse quality, but should be maybe 15 or 20 years newer. He was about 15 years older than her. His original that I have looks to have been edited with a pencil. Dont have my info handy, but I would estimate that he was born around 1845 and her around 1860. I dont know if the pictures were taken at the same time or not. They are not related to the other grandparents. All I have shown were born in germany.
I know this granfather came over as a grown man just after the civil war, and she came over in the later 1870s.
