BTW, there is an excellent book, "Civil War Guns" by William B. Edwards that you might want to find and read. He had a second edition out (I had both). A very interesting individual (emphasis on individual!).

If you are making a list of revolver producers during the War Between the States, the answer is: "Yes, you are missing several."

I'll read what othes have added before I dig out the reference book and attempt to complete your list.

Thanks Hobie! you saved me lots of typing!

you did neglect to enter one that I can think of without digging out a reference book. That would be Manhattan Arms, it was one of the companies Smith & Wesson sued out of business for patent infringement.

Speaking of Smith & Wesson, though never officially adopted, or purchased by the military, lots of soldiers were comforted to carry a Smith & Wessson .22 or .32 RF revolver as close quarters back-up.

Hobie, maybe you can answer a question for me. how the devil do you hold that Savage-North revolver? One finger for the trigger, one finger for the cocking lever, and only room for one more finger below the guard. It looks like a two-hand gun to me.

I'm stunned there were that many gunmakers making revolvers back then

Hey Doc, looking at it, if I was to pick it up I would stick two in the lever and the pinky under it, but I have small hands, it could be too tight for big hands or gloves.

Reid "My Friend" knuckle-Duster Revolver. patented December 26, 1865. .22 RF dates of manufacture unkonwn to me. The .32 RF version was manufactured from 1869 to 1884, about 3,400 made.

The .41 RF version was manufactured from 1875 to 1878, only 300 msde. marked "J. Reid's Derringer."

The .22 RF and .32 RF "My Friend" Revolvers wer made with both brass and iron frames.

Models No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and New model Knuckle Duster were made in small numbers (150 to 350) with barrels ranging from 1.75 tp 3" in length.

Production of all models apparently ceased in 1884.

I believe the only revolver manufacturers S&W didn't sue were Colt and Remington. Everyone else who used the bored through cylinder and metal cartridges got sued blind, bald, bowlegged and broke.

Remington held off on making a metallic cartridge revolver until after the Rollin White Patent had expired. As for Colt, I think they figured a way for their Mason-Richards Conversion Cylinders to avoid patent infringement. or they paid a royalty, I don't know for sure which it was.

IMO, tossing Rollin White out of his office was the second worse business decision Sam Colt ever made.

I believe S&W made more money between 1860 and 1869 suing for patent infringement than they did selling revolvers
