OT - 1861 vs. 1851
I have my father's old Uberti "Colt 1851 Navy", a real early one (from thw 1960's), and just adore this cap & ball revolver. Normally I'm a .44 guy, but this .36 is just about perfect.
Recently though, I've been eyeing the "Colt 1861 Navy" clone. Basically, it has the lines of the .44-caliber 1860 Army, but is in .36-caliber. Does anyone have one of these? What do you think of it?

I generally prefer short to snubby barrels on my handguns. But there is something about that 8" barrel on my M-1851 that makes it point so well it is ridiculous.
i thought that the M-1862 Pocket Police and M-1862 Navy used the same grip frame as the M-1851, and the main change was the ratchet-style rammer on both and the snubby barrel on the Pocket Police.
I love my .44's but the Navy's grip is just perfect for my hand. The M-1860 Army's grip just doesn't feel right to me.
i thought that the M-1862 Pocket Police and M-1862 Navy used the same grip frame as the M-1851, and the main change was the ratchet-style rammer on both and the snubby barrel on the Pocket Police.
I love my .44's but the Navy's grip is just perfect for my hand. The M-1860 Army's grip just doesn't feel right to me.

I've had both but prefer the "51" they both perform equally but the 51 to me, looks more rugged.

The 1861 Navy is my favorite. It combines the size and pointability of the 51 Navy with the beautifully contoured barrel and improved loading lever ram of the 1860 Army. Many feel the 1861 Navy was the ultimate expression of the Colts cap and ball design.

Cased with Some Accessories... Showing Her Other Side... Gotta Love Those Colors! Ain't she sweet?!?!? (Well, I think so!)
I just love that color case-hardening on this "Colt" -- as my Uberti 1862 Pocket Police doesn't even come close to those colorings... (It's all shades of grays and blues -- what I call a "Civil War" finish -- and they call "case-hardening"...)
Tight groups -- and lotsa smoke!

I had one for a while, my first revolver. IMHO it is the sweetest, nicest looking gun of the era. Whereas the '51 is kinda stitched together, the octagon barrel and all, the '61 says "art" or at least "finished product" to me. I wish I woulda kept it.

Well, just in case it wasn't, those are heavily oxidized lead balls -- I guess I need to spray some WD-40 or something on them, to make 'em shiny like all the other accessories.

We have an original Colt 1860 that I like quite a bit ! No we don't shoot it but I enjoy holding it from time to time !
This one "supposedly" belonged to one of the fellows in the the "34th Partisan Rangers" or in laymens terms "Mosby's Unit" !
But in my mind the best feeling of all the originals in our modest collection is the Colt 1849 31 cal Pocket Model with the 6" barrel ! We once purchased 7 of the pocket models in a group . Two are 6 inchers and the rest are the more common 4"and 5" .
