OT: Swedish 94

Post by Les Staley »

Always wanted one, couldn't afford $29 back in the day..loved the look of the arctic birch stock, mannlicher style short business like carbine.. ran in to one last weekend for $200.. been sporterized, Fajen stock, scoped, had been owned by a north Idaho game warden, now deceased.. Yesterday after a quick sight-in, I wrung it out at 100 yds.. three shots in .590" with 139 gr PMC WOW!! less than 5/8" .. I've got lots of expensive sporters that won't do that well... Les

Great rifles. The 94s have gotten really expensive in original condition in the last several years.
Saw one last weekend at a show with an $800 tag on it. Way over priced but some noodnick might pay it.

I LOVE the 94s. Tried to get that magic with my 96 but it comes up long (not short... ).

Congrats and please post pics if you can. They are a fine piece of craftsmanship. I have one in the 580's that was my Grandfather's, but no wood on it. I bought a Richards Micro Fit Mannlicher but it was done wrong, and they wouldn't make it right. So, looking for another Mannlicher stock. Hobie, how do you search the Numerich site for Carl Gustav? I don't see him on there.

A Swede 94 has been at the top of my "must have" list for 30 years now. I've had several sweet 96s in that time, but the only original-condition example of a 94 I have encountered was in horrible condition, and the asking price was $400 -- and this was 10 years ago!

I'd jump on a nicely-sporterized one, too, at the right price, and it sounds like that's exactly what you have done. Congratulations!

Hard to beat the combination of a .264" hole through a standard Mauser profile barrel for stiffness. The same envelope contains the bore for the 8mm and even larger diameters in European "wildcat" cartridges. in the case of the 6.5, the Mauser barrel is a medium-heavyweight barrel and couple that with the inherent ballistic advantages of the .264 caliber bullet, the package is a winner.

The 6.5 x 55 is one of my favorite cartridges. Enjoy the 94, a great find!

Though Mr. Staley's Swede obviously does not have the problem, some of these 94's are overbore. Mine is .268 and 1/2 in the grooves and factory ammo prints like buckshot at 50 yards...takes about 3 weeks to get the copper out. There are bullets available in the bigger diameter, if needed. Ammo must be kept seperate from other 6.5 Swede firearms that will be .264. Just and FYI for those who may scratch their heads at why they have accuracy problems with these early Swedes. Slug the bore if your having problems.

What's wrong with the scope? I always thought pretty was as pretty does, and those holes are awfully close together  . I have a British scope (Falcon) that looks alot like that and works grand, use it in service rifle competition out to 500yds.

That's a fine looking sporter, and the scope is not that bad. Still should have diopter sights though.

CCash, yours slugs at .268? Perfect for the Carcano bullets, hey?

Mine still has the original armory disk...according to it mine is perfect, and it shoots like it too.

Nice one! I also bought mine in sportered condition - but had to put quite a bit of work into it to bring it up to speed. The original owner messed everything up - inlay was incomplete, scope mount was loose (stripped screw holes), still had original safety so you couldn't mount a scope low, mannlicher stock was warped beyond repair.... but it looks good now!

Since that picture, I upgraded the scope mount:

Mine hasn't given me groups that small yet, but I've been loading 129 grain Hornady's for hunting and it puts them into 1.25" all day. Plenty good for the purpose - at around 2500 fps.

Yes, it is just a shade over .268..almost .269, but the lands are very prominent...I think .254 or therabouts. So, I'm concerned about pressure with the thick jacketed carcano bullets from Hornady. Folks have had some pressure signs with them, and have gone to these which have a thinner jacket and had better luck:
http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4,867.html

I think once I can get the wood on it, I will buy a box of these and try them. I think ideally the 160's would be better and fill the throat up a bit more, but you have to use what you can I guess.

Mine is all matching in the 500's range, manufactured 1898, but my Dad chopped up the stock as a young man and it pretty much needs some new wood. It wears a Williams FP. Since it was his and my Grandfathers, I'm going to have it done up nice with a Mannlicher stock.

I almost had one for 500.00 this last summer, but didn't think anybody would be up at 6 am on a Saturday, and lost the bid. It was very, very clean and saw it relisted at 850.00 a week later.

Mescalero,

That would be most awesome to have you duplicate it and thank you for your kind offer! Let me know when you get it running and when you have time...would love to have you do that. It would give the rifle that much more meaning, and it's already got alot. Many thanks to you!

O.S.O.K.: I realy like the clean lines of your 94.. stock is simple and clean.. metal work looks great! Was that the mannlicher stock that was giving you trouble, and you cut it down? Mescalero: be careful opening up a can of worms like that... you may get more business than you bargained for...(duplicateing a mannlicher)....
