Need Scope Help

Post by Bullard4075 »

I need a scope that has 5-6 inch eye relief. I have a 300 Win Mag that keeps "touchin" me.
Everything I find (internet) has 4 inch or 12 inch and nothing between. A Scout is too much.
The rifle is a Savage 110 that I really like . I also don't need high magnification , 2X to 4X would
be fine.

I have a 2.5X RedHead brand, with a circle-plex reticle that has 5" of eye relief. I don't do anything with Bass Pro anymore, so I'm just saying I have one with that eye relief. I could probably part with it pretty quickly too if you get hung up not being able to find one.

Look at one of the " old " Weavers in a lowered powered FIXED model.

One of the Scout scopes I had, a Burris IIRC, had 9 1/2" of eye relief, and my 1" tubed Simmons 2.5x20's have a little over 5".

FWIW, and with all due respect - a .300 Win Mag "touching me" sounds a lot like the buttstock's not long enough, IMHO.

I've fired .300, .338 & .375 mags with 4" eye relief scopes, and have never had one clip me yet.

You might want to temporarily try a slip-on buttpad, to extend the stock, and see if that'll cure your scope problem.

^ Pete is correct and that is likely the solution or the major part of it. Two other things to consider are the "cheek weld" so you have all the angles, including the recoil "sweep" correct; the other is that the higher the magnification the more sensitive and shallow (small range of adjustment back and forth) the eye relief. Yes, I prefer fixed magnification scopes for a bunch of reasons but the features I want are in very few. Seems the manufacturers make a couple basic variable platforms and expand on those. Speaking of magnification, a lot depends on the ranges you want to use. Most people are over-magnified. There's not much normal use for over 10X . SOmetimes one is forced to buy more for some of the features I mentioned but snipers used 8 and 10 x with .308 rounds at max range. Inside 500 yards I'd be happy with 6x (when my eyes were better I used to use irons at that: my dad and his generation trained at that in WWII with GArands and opens. ANyway, good luck and think of a good explanation ("You should see the other guy") when people see the black eye until you get the issue solved.

I agree about trying the buttstock-lengthening thing...
