OT I might get laid off this Thursday - Update: RETAINED

Post by pharmseller »

My company was purchased by another company in November. I find out this Thursday (1/7/10) if I will be a part of the "new" company moving forward.
This is not my first rodeo. In November of '07 I got laid off when the company I had been with for nearly 6 years eliminated my division. I posted the story here at that time.
I got a nice severance and found a new job within 48 hours (and that's a fun story to tell). The entire severance package went to my mortgage to reduce the principal. A good day. And since I have known about the possibility of losing my job since April, I have been stashing enough cash to pay about six months of bills.
The good news is the package this time is even better.
The bad news is it's not 2007 anymore. Fewer jobs with more competition, and I like my job better than the one I had. I will always bet on myself and my ability to get a new job.
My attitude is that there is no down side. If they keep me, great, I probably get to keep selling my current portfolio and I have a job.
If I get laid off, great, I get a big wad of cash and the opportunity to find a new job.
I believe that things happen for a reason, so however it turns out will be for the best. I might get a bit more shooting in, too.

I've seen lots of drug reps who get the dreaded 'conference call' where 30% get their jobs eliminated.

The funny thing is all the 'ethical' practices I've seen which don't see drug reps (lest they 'bait' the doctor with a slice of pizza or a shiny new $2.00 pen) are all on 'utilization' bonus programs where the doctor gets several THOUSAND dollars a month in bonus money to use whatever drugs (usually generics) that the employing hospital or HMO makes the most profit on.

I continue to see 'drug reps' and they are generally very helpful, keep my poor patients well-supplied with free samples and/or vouchers and 'charity' programs, and are good sources of information. Any doctor too stupid to take the 'sales' pitch factor into account doesn't need protected with more regulation; they need to get a job doing something less dangerous...!

Its nice to see someone who MIGHT lose his job to be taking it so joyfully. I wish those rotten ***'s I work for would lay me off just so I could collect unemployement. Then just lay around and work for my buddy Tom at Targetmaster until I can start collecting SS in a few years.

I know what you're saying Hoss...I lost my contractors license Dec. 31. Couldn't afford the $5000. + it would have cost me to renew it. As it was, it wasn't justified anyway considering the economy in Nev. Had to close my Kenpo studio as well...people can't afford the cost of training anymore either. Only have the range left...don't know how long that will last...

Prayers for all continue...

Those that have said attitude is everything are right. I didn't invent that notion, and certainly haven't been perfect about that in my life, ...but when I have and gotten my head straight, things have found a way of working out. And even then things may not be all roses,...But one thing's for sure, when it's the other way around and the attitude's bad, things are almost always much rougher and the way "out" much more complicated.

Best to you, and my thoughts are with you for success in whatever you do.

Great attitude and best of luck. One thing about the sales profession, it has to be on the up side of the economy. I know the old saying that nothing happens until someone buys something, but the real truth is that nothing happens until someone sells something. I made my living in sales for nearly 40 years and still do.

I have often said that everyone is a salesperson, but some people get paid for it. In every job, you have to persuade, influence or convince someone on something - whether that something is an idea, a dream, a product, a fix, a problem, a solution, or a priority. That is just another way of saying that you have to sell them.

If you can sell, you'll eat. Best of luck. It sounds to me like the new company would be foolish to lose you.

pharmseller...WHAT A GREAT ATTITUDE!

Heck, I've been looking over my shoulder for almost a year now, probably making myself more and more depressed as the weeks have gone by. Your attitude gives me a new perspective, look at it as what it MIGHT be, instead of what it COULD'VE been. Like yourelf, I too am in sales, but engineering sales of electronic components and the historic average tenure in my segment is 2.7 years. Therefore, if the hammer falls, I can say that I've at least tripled the average!

Looks like God wants me to stay with the "new" company.
I got my phone call at 9:30 (Pacific) this morning. Congratulations, you will be moving forward.
I'm relieved, of course, as I think this is the better outcome. At the same time I mourn for the 70% or so of my coworkers who will be looking for new jobs.
I'm ready for my new adventure!
Thanks for all the well wishes.
