What are your working guns?

Post by 336A »

Not sure if this has been done before and I'm too lazy to use the search function :) For me it is my Marlin 1894SS, Henry .22, and S&W heavy barrel M10 .38 SPL. These are what get used the mst when woods bumming or just taking a walk through the woods. Sometimes I will supplement the S&W M60 in lieu of the M10 though.

Mine vary as the seasons come and go. During dove season or bird hunting- my midland hammer 12 bore and my bond derringer. During Squirrel season or hunting, its a .22 du jour, and the smith model 60. During rifle season, my 92 and smith in .357, or my .475 and 1886. During muzzleloader seasons, my Emig .54 longrifle. During the rest of the year, my 92 is my constant companion and my hand gun varies between the Bond derringer, the Smith model 60 3 inch, or the Sig 226 Combat. I also bum around with my take down longbow, fishing rods or hiking pack. With those usually either the model 60 or the Bond go with.

next year, I plan to do all the hunting from dove season through rifle season, and all the late season small game, with my 12 bore Paradox.

"Working guns" are a PT1911 in 45acp and a Rock River AR-15.

"Bumming around guns" can vary quite a bit, but usually involve the Sidewinder 454 revolver and Puma 454 trapper.
"People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for rule by brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically 'right.' Guns ended that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work."

I guess by 'working guns' we'd be talking the ones used most, most of the year. So I'll go with the ones out of the safe right now which are usually outside of the safe.

4 3/4" .44 Ruger flattop--packed every day in the hills

24" .44 Marlin Cowboy--packed most every day in the hills

Colt Officers Model .45acp--on bedstand and packed when I go to town

Rifle: 356 Win. Big Bore 94 with my favorite Cast load.

Shotgun(Turkey): Bad weather will use my Win. 37A in 12 Gauge, better weather I will take either of my Granfather's Singles: a Win. 37 or shortened H and R Topper with screw in full choke.

Pistol: I usually pack my Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag. everywhere I go, with 44 Spec. loads. Concealing that gun in warm weather is a challenge, but I've passed under the eye of many a glaring Soccer/Obamamama's toting that pistol, with nary a hitch.

For Play, I love em all!

Edit: also should include my Early Lancaster Flintlock Rifle in 54 Cal., which I will use for late season flintlock this year..

Working guns? I guess you mean more or less "go to guns, for general applications"

Handguns, for whatever:
Most used is my old Series 70 Custom 1911 45ACP, I handle this gun, every single day, and it rests at the head of my bed, every single night, with a few spare mags.
Smith and Wesson K-22
Ruger Single Six
Smith and Wesson Model 29, 4 inch barrel

Other CCW guns:
Glock 22, 40cal
Springfield Armory Lightweight Commander style 45 ACP
Keltec 32
Colt Replica 45 peacemaker
And a few others

Centerfire Rifles: That I am likely to grab first
Browning BLR in .308 Win. = my always gun when I just absolutly got to get it killed, wheather it's a cattle chasing dog, a trophy buck, or mangey coyote.
Pre-64 Winchester 30/30
Browning BL 22
Winchester 94/22mag
Browning 92, 44mag
AR-15 with scope and barrel light

Shotguns:
House gun very old FN A5 12 gage auto, my most used semi-auto
Pheasants: I could hardly begin to count the clay targets and pheasants I have slaughtered with these guns, and a few others.
Winchester 23 side by side
J. P. Sauer Royal Side by side, 12ga
L.C. Smith hunter grade 12 ga side by side

I'm either carrying a 1911 or a .44 special revolver on my belt when I go armed. I like the way a 1911 handles and it packs quite comfortably inside the waistband for me. My revolvers are mostly single actions and I carry them in traditional western belt rigs.

My choice in long gun has generally been a lever action. Of late, that choice has become my Winchester '94 Trapper in .44 mag. I like that it is light, handy, and shares ammunition with my revolvers.

I almost always have my derringer on me.
I shoot all my center fire rifles equally.
Other than the derringer, I shoot my S&W 686 357 mag more than my other pistols.

My most often used "working gun" is my Kahr 9 followed by my Glock 17 poleece trade-in that rides in my Jeep. Several others pull protection duty as well but the rest are all for recreation of some kind - hunting, target shooting, etc.

Issued Glock 23 and Remington 870P shotgun
Personally owned Glock 27 authorized for off duty only (rarely carry it, though) G23 in Galco Summer Comfort holster works 98% of the time for CCW.
Mossberg 590A1 with Surefire forend and Vang Comp porting under my bed. These are also the weapons I shoot the most.

Recreational firearms;
Pre-ban Colt AR15 A2 (nuclear power plant security trade in)
Winchester M1 Garand gotten through DCM in 1989
M94 30-30
S&W Model 10 4" skinny barrel round butt - this is by far the most accurate handgun I have! (old authorized duty weapon in the bygone revolver only days at work)
1911 .45 (Essex 1911 type frame, WW11 Colt 1911A1 slide
S&W 66 4" barrel
Glock 22, 23, 26
Hi Standard Double Nine .22 (inherited from my wife's uncle - he won it on a punchboard in 1963)
Win. M70 30-06
still too many to list - am considering thinning the herd to buy a couple of levers and/or BP rifles (with a teenage shooter son in the house, sometimes you have to get two of some things)
will post pictures soon - still too technologically 'tarded to accomplish this without help from teenage children!
Winchester M94 30-30 (1980)
Winchester M70 Westerner 30-06 (1982)
Winchester M1 Garand (1942)
Too many others to list - hope to add more levers soon.

During bird season I prefer my simple NEF single shot 12 gauge even though I have fancier scatterguns. For close in woods hunting I usually grab my 1894 Marlin 44 mag but on the open I use a model 70 Winchester in 30-06 though a BLR in 308 would be nice. A Ruger 10-22 for general plinking fun.

In the city:

Glock 19 9mm, 2 spare mags. Custom AK47 fighting rifle with rifle fighting bag. Remington 870 12 gauge.

Off the beaten path:

S&W Model 29 .44 Magnum 4"; Winchester 94 Wrangler .44 Magnum with Simply Rugged butt cuff. Sometimes my Ruger Blackhawk .357 6 1/2". My oldest boy will carry his cut down NEF Pardner 20 gauge when he goes out with me.

I have a hard time defining any of my guns as "working guns". I have plinkin guns and hunting guns. They all crossover into HD guns. If by working guns you mean which guns spend the most time in the field I can go with that.

Tied for #1 is my two 10/22's. One wears a 4x scope and is used mainly for rabbits and squirrels. But it's also the one that rides in the truck during hunting season because it will also work for coon and fox callin (I like 1 power scopes for coon callin and guns with more range for fox) and I'll shoot at coyotes with whatever is available. 10/22 #2 wears a reddot and is my coon hunting gun. Which BTW, 75% my time spent in the field is coon hunting thus it gets a tie with the other 10/22. Last sunday gun #1 accounted for some rabbits and squirrels, this weekend #2 has accounted for one coon today and hopefully many more tomorrow. It's very rare that I go hunting that a 10/22 isn't in my hands or at a minimum in the truck.

#2 in the field is my Savage .22-250. It's been my coyote/fox gun for 8 or 10 years.

#3 is my 870 slug gun. it spends 5 days straight with me every deer season. But it never leaves the safe other than that.

Handguns are dead weight to me anymore and reserved for plinkin.

Sadly, a lever gun doesn't leave home much. I do however have some new 125gr reloads I need to check POA with and it many go after coyotes tomorrow morning. It may replace the Savage for coyotes.

Working guns:

S&W 19 .357 or a 1991a1 for carry purposes

Rifles: lately my working rifle has been a Romanian PSL in 7.62x54R, but I'm leaning on the old Marlin 1985SS a bit more so that I can get back to my roots.

Shotgun: A Winnie Defender rests besides the bed, with a Stevens 311H series doing the bird downing when that needs to be done. All in 12 gauge of course.

At work: S&W M&P40, M&P40 compact, J-frame 38, Rem 870, AR15, Rem 700 .308.

If it were up to me (maybe post-retirement) I'd probably go with a 5" 1911, or a 4" .357 or 44, .357 or .44 levergun, 870, Ruger .22 pistol.
