A Tale of 2 Pumas

Post by Chas. »

The top one is as received from Bud's in September. It was the prettiest of the two. The bottom one (also from Bud's), bought last month, had no grain showing, was flat, very dark, and looked much worse than the one on top. It was just a butt ugly duckling. A little refinishing brought out this swan. He also enjoys his new sights as recommended by COSteve and some others. Unfortunately, the pic doesn't do it justice.

I am not going to buy another one... I'm not. Really. $386 is way too much. It is. Really. Too much. Way too much. Don't need it.

Great work!

So tell us the details of the refinish job. I've got two Rossis that might look great with fancier looking stocks.

Guys just take that stained and oiled wood off the gun and get you some tru-oil and get busy. This one's got about 5 or 6 coats rubbed out with 4/0 steel wool in between. Let it harden for about a week then a coat of wax. I use Johnson paste wax.

If you want it shinier just keep adding and rubbing. This one has probably 10 to 15 coats. To get the red the first 4 or 5 coats were done with tru-oil with one or two drops of fire engine red krylon spray paint mixed in the tru-oil. Once I got the red tint like I wanted I finished with straight tru-oil.

Chas. That refinish makes that gun really pop. good job.

What I did was really low-tech. First, I stripped it using off-the-shelf stripper from Walmart. Then I used gloss polyurethane finish, also off-the-shelf walmart. When putting it on straight from the can, I was getting air bubbles in it. So I thinned it a bit and that took care of the air bubbles. It turned out pretty good, but I like Steve's examples better.

Thanks for the pic Chas and others. I ordered the 44 mag case finish like that from Buds and your pic is better than theirs.

I was torn betwixt the 44 & 357, but wasn't sure how the rifle handled Blazer AL ammo.

Of course now I'm trying to justify/rationalize buying one in 357. I already had a satin stainless NV 45 Colt so I had to have one lever in SS 45 Colt. The cowboy ammo I have will probably allow me up close blow-by experience so I'll probably have to turn to reloading to fix that issue.

Had I known of the cowboy blow-by problem in 45 Colt I probably would never have bought the Ruger SA. I'm slowly sinking into the quicksand quagmire as the madness hastens my demise the more I struggle.

I guess the only cure is going broke. Luckily, I'm not far from there...
