Picked up a new Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag....
I gotta tell ya- I love this little rifle! What setup do you guys recommend- leaving the standard sights, adding a replacement barrel mounted sight, aperture, scope, etc? This will be a combination deer/plinking gun.
Also, will the Winchester "white box" 240 grain loads suffice for deer sized game?

1. APERTURE SIGHTS...[ UNLESS YOUR BLIND, AND THEN A SCOPE, OR NEW GLASSES, THE LATTER PREFERRED.]
2. YEP, YOU CAN KILL A DEER WITH ANYTHING LIKE THEY'RE MADE OUTTA AIR AND CHEESE.

I can't add anything to what Terry said. I got a new 1894 in 44 mag this year and absolutely love the thing. I was extremely pleased with the accuracy of the WWB and killed the biggest whitetail buck of my life with it (DON'T MAKE ME POST ANOTHER PICTURE OF IT, I'LL DO IT!). After Christmas, I'll be putting a Williams FP sight on it and I'll call it PERFECT!

What Terry said.
Seriously I much prefer the side mount Lyman 66LA or Williams FP 94/36 receiver sights on Marlin lever guns. The top mount sights sit way too far to the rear due to the location of the scope mount holes. So depending on the vintage of your Marlin you might have to have it drilled and tapped for the side mount sight, but it's more than worth it.
Deers do not wear Kevlar body armor. Just about any good 240gr load will stomp them to the ground ... if you do your part.

That's mine. I installed an XS rear aperture sight and a taller Marbles front 1/16" brass bead front sight. I also slimed the forend down and replaced the red buttpad with a nice hard rubber one given to me by a member here

Because of the robust nature of the 44 Magnum as opposed to the whitetail deer, you can hunt effectively with most any ammo. The white box HP's will do just fine.

I have had one for many years now, I love it, it still wears the factory rear sight but I changed the front to a firesight, it has accounted for a few deer

Agree with all above except I prefer a Marbles tang-mounted peep. The .44 has a flip-down rear that folds out of the way but provides a backup sight.

nralover - here's a bunch of photos of sighting options I've found useful for Marlins and Pumas - hope it helps...(scroll down the post)

I mount mine in the front scope holes - kind of a 'scout-peep' setup. Works really well with the aperture out and 'ghost ringed' - I can hit more accurately at 50 yards (or 100, I suppose, for that matter) with that setup than with most scopes.J Miller wrote:The top mount sights sit way too far to the rear due to the location of the scope mount holes.

AJMD, now that you posted that link, I'm going to have to think long and hard about those Skinner Sights!

I have the Skinner sights, both front and rear, on my Marlin 1894 SS .44mag. Nice little outfit for sure.

Re: Picked up a new Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag....
Mine's a 1977 vintage just like me, and also has XS ghost ring rear, with the white stripe XS front.
I'd be VERY interested to know where that rubber buttpad came from.......
Mine has a cobra-strap sling mounted backwards (i carry muzzle down, or in the hand). Never shot a deer (yet) but the 240 WWB JSP round is my ammo of choice.

Where do you buy those taurus tang sights and do they fit the 1894s? A $29 tang sight sounds awesome!

I can't tell for sure from the photos I see here, but are you guys showing full length 1894's or the 16.5 inch P model?

I bought a 1977 version a few months back and used some remington jhp I had on had to test, it liked them so the kid used it this year for hunting. His first buck ever and the remingtons put a nice neat little hole as a entry wound and the far ribcage you could easily put a silver dollar through. the buck went 20 yards and piled up. This is the same kid who had his finger mashed by the log splitter 4 weeks ago.
FWIW he says he might let me use the marlin again at some point...kids!

Well, you can do like I did for sights.....I liked my Cowboy so much with a Williams receiver sight, I bought another and put a scope on it for the heavy dark timber!

Not sure if they will fit a 1894, but they do fit the Pumas from what I hear.oic0 wrote:Where do you buy those taurus tang sights and do they fit the 1894s? A $29 tang sight sounds awesome!
Taurus Tang Sight Phone # to order is listed above the picture.
Re: Picked up a new Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag....
Not sure if they are available any more. They don't fit the Marlins for two reasons - one is hole spacing, which could be worked around, but the other I think was that they don't lay flat enough for the bolt or hammer to come back without hitting them. Truthfully, you COULD do it, but I think you'd be mounting it part on the tang, and part on the buttstock.oic0 wrote:Where do you buy those taurus tang sights and do they fit the 1894s?
