I will never forget Pearl Harbor. A reminder for me is my Dad's birthday. He was born December 7, 1912.

Re: Have we already forgotten?
I have not forgotten. There was a news article on a local TV channel last night with interviews of veterans and pics as well. There was also an article yesterday in Springfield's Journal Register.
I think many people have not been educated about it. Their parents were not either. They simply do not know how important December 7th 1941 is to the history of our country.
Others, specifically the politicians in this country want to forget.

IIRC, we are down to one (1) WWI veteran and each day we lose something like 1,300 WWII veterans. Our society will be lessened significantly when they pass.

Re: Have we already forgotten?
Cannot forget, as this is my birthday!! I make a point of going and visiting my neighbors that are WW II vets at least once a week and thanking them for their sacrifices. One told me this a.m. that he thought I would look funny speaking Japanese...so he is relieved that all worked out well.....LOL !!
Thanks, Tom

I don't see much TV, but do catch NPR at 0500 most Mondays through Fridays. The Pearl Harbor attack was covered this morning. Not that I needed reminding.

Fox News had it on. I saw one segment where they were laying a memorial wreath at Arlington.
Tonight I plan to dig out my VHS tape of "Tora Tora Tora" and watch it.

Re: Have we already forgotten?
I have a friend that was 9 years old the day they bombed Pearl. He was living there at the time. His dad was a civilian in what would be the FAA today. He said he watched the planes dive down from his front porch. a few days later his dad brought home a piece of a Jap bomb that was found near some buildings.
I also used to know a fellow named Curtis that hated all things Japanese. When I met his brother, the brother explained to me that Curtis had enlisted in the Navy at 17 years of age with his mom's permission. Curtis lost a lot of ship mates at Pearl and his brother told me he was never the same after that. Last I heard of Curtis he was in a mental institute. I'm convinced that it was hatred that did that to him. He used to dwell on it all the time.

At 12:48 PM CST I faced west and offered a moment of silence, along with a thanks for the men and women who went to correct this day of infamy.
It is still why you will not find a Toyota, Datsun, or other Jap vehicle on my property. They ain't welcome, kinda like spit'n on my Uncle's grave....he was on the Pennsylvania.

I'm froma a Navy family. My dad and I are the only two in three generations that weren't Navy. My grandfathers last ship before he retired was the Vestal. The was recalled when the war started. Sadly he died in '42 before he could go to sea to avenge his shipmates.

Re: Have we already forgotten?
I was almost 7 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. I remember my dad and the neighbors talking about what this attack meant. We lived in San Diego and some of the people worried that the Japs would attack there as it was a major naval base. My buddies and I killed hundreds of Japs in the canyons below our house all during the war. No more cowboys and indians for us! My dad was an air raid warden. Everyone was nervous until we started winning back the islands. My family welcomed servicemen into our home all during the war as a way of saying thanks. I never forget December 7, 1941, I hope we never will!

Re: Have we already forgotten?
My dad was there on the USS Dobbin, He was at Pearl Harbor about a year before the japs attacked. He was going to school on the Dobbin for about 30 days. His ship [DD-400 USS McCall] was out to sea with the Enterprise. All he and the guys in school with him could do was get 50 cal. ammo from below deck and bring it up for the ma duce's. One of my dads friends was killed by a bomb that hit near the Dobbin. It took me over 40 years just to get that info from my dad as he didnt talk about it much. He passed away in 2002.
Endeavor to persevere

It's pretty sad the lack of coverage it seems to be getting this year. If you forget your history you are doomed to repeat it.

Re: Have we already forgotten?
It was on the news up here, there was a sound clip of a survivor who said "the jap planes flew so low I made eye contact with one pilot and still dream about it today"

Re: Have we already forgotten? NEVER!!!
I am so proud of my 10-year old nephew Jeremy...
For the last 1.5 weeks, he has called City Hall where he lives EVERY DAY asking them if they would fly the flags at half-mast today...
Finally, last Friday he got a call from the Mayor, saying the staff had mentioned his repeated calls -- and they would do it.
(I'm thinking they relented, and didn't do it out of any real sense of patriotism... But still, Jeremy got his way! And learned a valuable civic lesson! Or maybe he taught them one...)
Here he is a few years ago with his German helmet and my Swedish WWII uniform and Swedish Gevar m/94-14 Carbine. * * Never shoulda sold that one, but it funded a couple of leverguns...........
Never forget!

Re: Have we already forgotten?
I didn't forget, and I always watch "Tora Tora Tora" on Dec 7. I didn't have time to watch it until now (11:55 pm) so technically I made it.
I usually wake up early and watch it in the morning but I have been sick and slept right through.
That and 9-11 still make me mad.

Plus there was a memorial in downtown Sac near the I Street bridge with some local stations present and a handful of survivors. Very nice. Along the riverwalk, is a memorial in which hangs the ship's bell from the gunboat USS Sacramento, which was present during the attack. Her gunners shot down 2 Japanese planes during their torpedo runs on Battleship Row.
Some people just need a sympathetic pat on the head.....with a hammer. Repeatedly.
