Bought a .444 Today(pics added)

Post by Swampman »

I bought a pre-CBS .444 for $163.00 out the door at the gun show. Now I just have to strip the camo paint off of it and figure out if I should repair or replace the cracked forearm.

Swampman,

In this case you really need to take before, during, and after repair pictures. You know the winter is coming on an we're gonna be suffering from terminal cabin fever pretty soon.

And congratulations on your acquisition .... even if you did semi-purloin it.

I used some acetone to remove the paint just on the receiver and the bluing looks great underneath. It was made in 1980. The trigger pull & action are very smooth & light. Not the prettiest barrel I've ever looked through but I'll bet it will clean up and shoot great with a little elbow grease.

I'll take some pics before I remove anymore paint. The foreend has split at some point and the guy repaired it with screws and Plasticwood. I may try to save it or I may replace it. I saw a Japanese Simmons 1-4X20 for $30.00 I wanted it real bad but I'm on restriction already;)

I'm totally picking up what you're laying down. Too funny.

Congratulations on your acquisition. And, yes, it would be highly appreciated if you'd do a documentary on the piece from beginning to end.

Replace it, but save the old one, and drill it out for a under-forearm segment of scope-rail; then you can easily mount the old forend back on with the rail, when you want a light or laser or something nasty for shooting wild hogs at night, etc.

I suspect once you get all that pain off of it you're going to have a pretty nice rifle. OBTW, if it were me, I'd just replace that forearm.

I'd be on the phone with Marlin Monday morning, ordering a forearm.

Actually, I'd probably wait and see what the butt stock looks like under all that paint. Just to be sure it isn't damaged too.

Anxious to see the finished product and hear how she shoots.

all in all, doest look lik a bad camo job at all --- just wish the PO had done it to a Ram Line stock and not factory walnut  but then again, you likely wouldnt have gotten it for 160 bucks that way either

I'm not into camo jobs on such guns but, it looks a lot better than I had imagined. Plus it knocked off a lot of $$$ from the price tag. Congratulations on a great find.
