Tru Oil stock refinish before and after pics

Post by Dave »

This is a Marlin I picked up about a week ago. The stocks weren't terribly beat up but the original Mar Shield finish was almost gone and there were paint specks on the wood as well. I took the Mar Shield off and Tru Oiled the wood and now it looks really good and will bead water too. This was my second time doing a Marlin with Tru Oil and both times it turned out great. This gun has a lot of soul.

Ain't it 'purty...you did a real good job Dave. Looks to have just enough blueing wear to make it look old timey. Stock came out just right!

Looks great. I've done about four stocks now with Tru Oil and all of them have turned out looking real good.

Really turned out well! What kind of scope is on that handsome rifle?

It has a Tasco brand straight four power on it. If I was going to keep the gun I would likely go with a Williams 5D peep sight on the back. I already got talked out of it so I am going to leave the Tasco on there.

Nice work.

If I can make a suggestion: Remove the white line spacers, and re-install the BP & PG cap - you might really like the difference it makes in the way the rifle looks.

I'm with you on the white line spacers. I never liked them and don't understand why they were invented. They are almost as cool as pressed basketweave checkering!

Hear, hear! I'm glad to see A.) that there are others who don't care for the white-line spacer look, and B.) that there's someone else old enough to remember the Herter spacers that out-Weatherby'd Weatherby!

Thank you, Dave. The reason I asked is that the first-year 336ADL which I recently bought carried a Tasco 3-9X variable scope. It looks exactly like the one on your rifle except that mine has a power-adjusting ring. It's actually a much better scope than I had originally thought. I've been trying to figure out how old it might be. When was your 336 made?

(Your oil finish sure has it all over that awfuld Marshield stuff...)

That gun was made in 1976. I have a feeling the scope is from about that time. No way to really know though I guess.

nicely done! My brother refinished a Marlin with Tru-Oil last year and it turned out great. He was selling it a few weeks ago and I wanted to get my hands on it, but cash talks and I didn't have any

Nice looking 336. I used TruOil many years ago on an old stock, and the results were outstanding. Not sure why I never thought about using it again.
