OT- Old photo of an over dressed cowboy. WOW!

Post by rangerider7 »

I just couldn't help but show this guy to y'all. This old photo was taken in England. If this is what they thought an American cowboy looked like they must have just attended Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in London and got carried away at the local haberdashery.

I'm dating myself but he reminds me of Bob Hope in the movie "Buttons and Bows" with Jane Russell or was it "The Paleface". It could have been "Son of Paleface." Oh well, he was dressed funny in one or all of them.:D

Guessing about 1910 or so? Doesn't look much sillier to me than Roy Rogers or Clayton Moore in their tight-fitting suits and stirrups on their trouser cuffs to keep their pants in their boots.

OK, we've all had our fun. Now lets get serious! What is the revolver in the "holster"? I'm thinking a British Bulldog type, or maybe a Belgiun double action of some sort.

Did you notice his revolver is a bit short of the holster? Looks like one of those places you go - they have all of the clothes and such and you get duded up for the pic

It's pretty obvious this is another photographer's studio picture. The props are all too new and unrealistic for any real use. I doubt the "leather" is nothing more than oil finished cloth, similar to what was used on table cloths. In film terminology this would be known as a gallery print.
The location of the holster on the belt would not be usuable for riding and, as someone mentioned, cut for a much larger gun. The whole custom appears to have been made for an early stage play, and our nobile young man the "hero of the west"!

I might be wrong, it has been known to happen once in a long while  , but I believe the movie you are thinking about was Paleface, Bob's character was "Painless Potter, the Painless (& incompetent) Dentist. i believe "Buttons and Bows" was the name of one of the songs he sang in that movie.

i can still remember "Painless" hiding in a rain-barrel shooting blindly through the bunghole during an Indian attack. Jane Russell, shooting from a window over the barrel shot a big stack of Indians, and everyone else thought "Painlessss" was a fearless sureshot hero. Great movie.

About the photo.

The hat isn not to my taste, and the shirt is rather garish, but dammit all I kinda like the boots! They look mjch like the 16th and 17th Century Cavalry boots I've always wanted. You also have to admit, with boots like those, a fllow would have little need of chaps.

Let's just be thankful he's not wearing Woolie Chaps.

And that dangling revolver, isn't that an English-made DA of some sort?

Wrong heel and sole. I actually wear these most days, but I thought they were too light colored (sore thumbish) so I dyed them dark brown.
