Tally Oh! Getting ready to go...deer hunting!

Post by Old Time Hunter »

Last evening at home guys, pack'n up and head'n out for up to the next ten days. It is rifle season in Wisconsin starting Saturday. Decided on these to take:

'94 Black Shadow .444
'94 Timber Carbine .444
'94 Trapper .44 Mag
'73 Trapdoor Rifle (1877)
'73 Trapdoor Carbine (1879)
M95 Austrian
88 Commission Rifle
1936 Mosin-Nagant
and....
1940 '94 Winchester .30-30
M1895 Marlin .450, for the young tykes that brag about how tough they are.

Oh yea, my .44 Mag 7 1/2" Ruger Black Hawk

My son just called, he wants me to bring along my '73 Winchester .44-40 (1881)

The '94's are the main hunt'n guns, but I will try and carry each of the others at least half a day.

A problem most of the old timers never had.
I wounder at times if we are really any better off
with all the choices we have to make with all the
things/toys we have these days.
I also wounder at times how much more content I
would be with one good rifle and one good shotgun,
and really got to know them like the back of my hand
like the old timers did. Just me thinking about life

It's always a good idea to take a back up rifle or ten.

Good luck with your hunting.

Make sure you take a spare :D

I was just starting to pack up for next weekend too.
I usually only take two rifles but this year I added one more
since I managed to get the whole week off.

Marln .450 scout rifle.
Grandpa's '95 Winchester in .35 WCF( i didn't take any "family" guns last year and felt really strange).
and the Savage 99/ .30-30 my Dad bought me
last summer.

Two pistols go too. 1911 and Glock 19 for fun.

Who's gonna caddy for you? You need someone in golf nickers, cardigan sweater and a tam to pull a rifle out of a bag and hand it to you after you discuss range, wind direction, elevation and where to place the shot. In the backround two guys will speak in subdued voices describing the shot. After the shot you can wave to the gallery and head to the clubhouse.

It could've been worse, I could've added these to the tally;

Then again, I would've needed Griff's semi to haul 'em and the ammo. I've got to learn to part with some, over the last 55 years came across "deals" now and again, but never divested myself of past deals. Now at last count there are 93 rifles down in the gun room...gotta start move'n 'em out sooner or later.

Anyways, lights are being turned off and lock'n the door behind me...I'm off to get my share of these:

Old Time Hunter, Good luck friend! Shoot one for me! This is the first time in over 25 years I am not Hunting Deer (and that was because of a broken leg from a Karate tournament back then). (wife has me this weeks task replacing ALL the ceiling lights in our house, just delivered(dont need it???) plus adding a bar island w/hanging lights.?? Its killing me not to run and get the License right now(tomorrow it starts) and use candles for now! God this is hard!
Best of Luck!

Casastahle,

Mike - I hear you. We do have too many toys. What would your one shotgun and rifle be? Mine would ultimatly be perhaps a drilling in 12x12 over 30-06? for now, my double sidexside hammer 12 gauge and either my 92 in .357 or 86 in 45-70. I guess I would have to hunt small game with the shotgun. I would then carry my smith pistol to round out the trio. I could be happy deer hunting, bird hunting, small game hunting with those.

If you look at the top of the hill at the end of the line of deer there are two people standing there! If we owned property all the deer would be my wife's pets and I'd have to hunt somewhere else.

Mike in all seriousness, I could narrow it down to 2.
(And yes guys I do have a lever without glass riding the top or side. :) )

If push came to shove I could really get by with my .45 cal. Flintlock.

Well, I couldn't do it. The whole time I was up at the other place working wife said"all you are doing is looking outside the windows for deer!(no work getting done
So with a couple hours left ran down and paid the $200 for tomorrow :D
First week I will be taking the younger ones out and see if they can score! Work on the house???
There is always December???????????? Al least the part after Deer/Bear season! :D
Actually, tomorrow for myself I think I will take the Colt HBAR (got some 5 rd mags) with the 69 grainers.
The Bear season does not start until another week! Somthing bigger for that!
