I decided I would like to use some dummy rounds when I dry fire practic with my model 71 Winchester.
Safety is always important and the dummy rounds needed to not be confused with live ammo.
I decided that leaving the primers out would make them very obvious as dummy rounds.
Turns out that the empty primer pocket causes a problem when trying to insert them into the magazine.
The first goes in just fine, but the bullet nose on following rounds gets cought in the primer pocket and keeps the round from loading.
Just sharing my experience.

Leave fired primers in place, and drill a small hole ( or 2, or 3...) in the side of each case.

You can also fill the primer pockets with an elastomeric caulk. It will soak up the firing pin strike without damageing it and allow free loading and cycling of the dummys.
