Belgium 37......??

My barber told me he acquired a Belgium 37 pistol in Italy during WWII......Couldn't bring it home. He said it was the most beautiful gun he has ever seen.

I didn't think to ask him if it was a pistol or revolver.....He is not a gun person by any means. He had to give up the gun before boarding the ship to come home.....I guess it made an officer happy.

I've never heard of a Belgium 37. Has anyone heard of it, or was he just mistaken..?

I wonder if he could have been talking about a Walther P-38. This one came back from WWII with my neighbor along with the capture papers and 3 other guns.

I'm guessing that it might be a Belgian made P-35, aka Browning Hi-Power

I asked him the same, could that have been a 35 or 38 instead of a 37.

He said, no, it was a 37. I didn't question it farther. After all, this happened in 1945.......He's well into his 80's now, but still going strong and has a good head on him.

I expect he is mistaken, but thats ok too.

Being Hungarian issue, I can certainly see where one would have wound up in Italy and Hungary actually produced some for Germany as well.

My bets are on the Hungarian model 37.

Germany used over 50+ different "issue" pistols during the war, even a .45 ACP (Norwegian M1914, Colt licensed copy of the M1911) in various places. Non frontline units, or lower ranking guys could get all sorts of stuff issued, not just the usual P38 or Luger or Walther. Aircrew, Navy, and various armed civilians (Party members, Gestapo, etc) carried all kinds of odd stuff.

Since Belgium, home of FN, was cranking out guns around the clock, it could be one of the various smaller FN pocket pistols, or the Hungarian one.
