anyone hunting this season?

Post by gumpond »

Is deer season in elsewhere? I don't see the posts. Had a quick start Saturday. Had to wait till 7:15 to get enought light to make out the front bead. Watched a small buck for about 3 minutes before I could see the bead. First shot of the morning in the national forest.
Good thing too. Started raining 30 minutes later and I wasn't prepared.
Fresh venison steak last night.
Model 94 30wcf with redfield peep. About 30 yards in the deep Georgia woods.

Not me, been so involved with my house build, haven't had the time. Hope to be done sometime in December, and be ready for next years season.

Firearms season doesn't open here until Nov 14. Hopefully I have a place to hunt by then. Got a couple of irons in the fire hope it goes well.

Today was my first day of hunting with BP flintlock. Saw 4 does at around 10am, unfortunately, even though they were 40 yards broadside to me, they were just feet off of the boundary of the game lands and I didn't shoot. Tonight, walking out early ( I had a leadership class at church to fascilitate) I had another doe at 20 yards, perfectly legal on game lands, but too close to the road and I let it walk. These things test a man. Those 5 deer were more than I have seen in three years on this property. I won't have a chance to hunt them till later this week.

True. I guess I didn't consider that "modern-gun".

Since most 'true' muzzleloaders disrespect my scoped, stainless, in-line Savage ML-II, especially since I use IMR SR-4759 in it rather than some foul brew of potash, egg yolks, and charcoal, I suppose I should consider it a "modern" gun too...!

Season opened Saturday here too. Been packing around a 44 Marlin Cowboy with a Lyman receiver sight, but no luck. Have till the end of the month and the freezers are full of beef and pork, not in a big hurry to get anything to cut and wrap

Hey any fire arm is modern in my opinion. If we truly went primitive we chase deer with long pointy sticks. :D

Shot doves in early Sept. Shot a blacktail deer in late Sept. Shot pheasant and chukar too. Been bow hunting whitetails and had a few opportunities. Recently shot a four horned ram - but didn't recover it. Two days ago I stuck a whopper hog. Tue, Wed continuing the deer quest then again on Sat and Sun. More to follow...... Who's been hunting? Well, me - a little.....

my usual routine, watching other people trundle their bucks past me on Opening Day, then climbing every ridge and scaring up a doe or two.

Been hunting hogs all year long on the ranch, I've fallen a little short of my goal of one a week but I'm not too far behind. I'm working on killing a free ranging, low fence Texas elk in the Glass mountains. I spent a week of hunting with no luck but will return for another week at the end of the month. Other than that, Texas whitetail and mule deer with leverguns starting in November. Same as usual.

You bet I'm going hunting this fall! Our Whitetail Deer season doesn't open until November 7th. Come first light, I'll be in the bush.

Been out twice with my bow so far. Had the same 2 does and 2 fawns under my stand both times, no shooting opportunity. Muzzleloading starts here in OK this Saturday so I'll be out with Flinty trying hard not to mess up.!

Rifle open next week end here. Black powder in another zone in 2 weeks. I usuall take 2 weeks vacation to hunt, but since I started a new job so much for that. May try on the week end, but I have seen little sign while out partridge hunting (got 4 of them so far) that I might just skip it this year. The deer population locally has a hard couple of winters with coyotes getting more than their share also.

I just got back from a few days camping and hunting (muzzle loader) in the Leatherwoods. The ice storm last year was really tough on my favorite hunting grounds, There is so much timber down that getting a clear shot on the deer I saw was impossible. I didn't see a single acorn or persimmon anywhere,I'm afraid the critters are gonna have a rough, hungry winter.

Here in Arkansaw bow season opened the 1st and blackpowder season [reckon I can't call it that anymore] opened the Saturday the 17th. I saw a few deer bow hunting but to far for my recurve. I saw one doe Saturday morning, just a little to slow to get on her before she disappeared behind some rocks.Today the skeeters were to bad. I think the deer have gone nocturnal on us down here now for awhile, I reckon SmokeEater saw that too.

Been out bow hunting twice since it opened September 12th. Had a antlerless four day gun special hunt Oct 14th -18th in certain areas, didn't go because there where quite a few on the public lands near my house. Will be back in Northern Wisconsin on my hunting land for bow this weekend. Regular rifle up north starts the 21st of November and runs 9 days (they might start a week early this year though and make it a 16 day hunt), then BP for a week, then antlerless for a week, then bow until first week in January. And, back down around my house, antlerless rifle from mid Dec until end of year. So, over the next 2 1/2 months I can hunt bow, rifle, and BP for Whitetail....then if the Herd Reduction rule kicks in, I'll hunt down around the house into February for special culling hunts. So far I've let about ten deer walk, 'course a couple were out a range for a bow, a couple were too small, one was a nice ten point buck but that was in "earn a buck" area so I had to let it go...then I saw the big doe, didn't draw the string on either.

Went north in the pickup about 180 miles, and spent 36 hours with 6 of my 7 brothers, hunting. Saw a few Elk, and lots of Whitetails and several Mule Deer. One of my little brothers got a small mule deer buck. It has been 20 plus years since we all got out together like that. Here's hoping we can all get out for a couple day's in November.

I'll be heading up north tomorrow morning for a week in the woods with a couple of my cousins and their sons. It's zone G1, a late season buck hunt in area C3. The season opens Saturday 24 October and ends the following Sunday, 1 November. We'll be off the grid, no electricity, phone or gas. Tent camping and open air cookin' at it's best. I'll take my bolt .30-06, but will also drag along one of my .33 Winchesters. The goal is a big 4X4, but anything 3X3 or bigger will work. The ranch trespass fee is fairly large, so making a score is somewhat important. Regardless, it'll be great hunting with a bunch of good guys. :D

You're right Jerry, they go nocturnal pretty quick around here after the hunter's hit the woods. I had several come up to my camp after dark and snort and stampede off.

I am done and suffering withdrawals. One forkhorn, one 3x3 buck and a cow elk. Guess I need to buy a quail stamp. Except the wife tells me I don't have time to hunt quail!

I been bow hunting since Sept 15th. Only took one doe so far but let alot walk waiting for a buck. Only to learn theyre having a town hunt right behind where I'v been sitting. Thats why I took the doe, had I known they were going to do a cull hunt I'd have had at least 4 by now. Things happen. I'll be at another spot tomorrow morning & evening thats showing ALOT of promising sign.
