Can not remember who did the skunk smell remedy thread but,
it has already come in handy.
Not for me , but other people's dogs have been nailed.
You should see the looks on the women's faces when I tell them pre-mixed Massingill douche!

Yes, I've seen those looks too! Too funny! The pre-mixed Massengill Douche treatment was a tip from my vet, an old time Mainer. Best thing about it...IT WORKS! Victor

I've tried tomato juice, tomato sauce, tomato puree and while they may have knocked the edge off the smell they by no means eliminated the smell.
I did learn that if you wash real good the smell will mostly be gone in a couple of days.
Good to know about Massengill douche stuff, I will definitely keep it in mind.
1 quart of hydrogen peroxide , 1/4 cup baking soda ,1 teaspoon liquid dish soap it completely eliminates the smell. small dog you can cut in half measurements have to be exact. danny

Remember, it has to be the premixed Massengill Douche solution. Don't know why, but my vet made sure I understood that.

Danny.what do you do mix it all up then pour mixture on dog and lather them all up? How long do you leave it on? then do you just put them in the shower and rinse it off?
I like the peroxide one too. I read that the guy who came up with it would have marketed it, but it becomes unstable after so long (like it can blow up or something).

I think I started that thread a few years ago, anyway, the mix I used didn't include the baking soda. You put it in a pump spray bottle, spray the dog liberally (taking care to avoid the eyes, nose and mouth), work it down into the fur, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse it off.
It doesn't keep because the peroxide will loose its extra oxygen if left unsealed and that's what makes it work. If sealed up it will last quite a while but since it's commonly available stuff, best to just make enough to use at the time.

Madman, mix it up ,it lathers up real good try and keep it out of their eyes and rinse out side and if its winter do a outside wash then bring them in the shower for a warm up. danny
Yup, my dog has been hit a couple of times when a skunk tried to get in the chicken coup also had a skunk spray in the barn I made up batch and put in a sprayer and hosed down the barn it works great. danny
Can you really catch a skunk by putting salt on its tail? Hey, ya know what? In Louisiana (now this is true) they have a Spotted Dancing Skunk. Check this out,that little grub if threatened first does this litlle dance around you/then if you dont leave it does a handstand facing you upside down its tail flips over and while its arching its little back upside down in that position it SPRAYS you! Isnt that just Precious?? Its true /saw it on one of the Wild Kingdom episodes.
I generally tie the dog to the shed & let my wife take care of it. I did it once, tried tomato juice but ended up buying special shampoo. The dog was uncooperative & by the time it was over I stunk more than him.
He still chases skunks & gets sprayed, but since he's a grown up & ought to know better,,, I tie him to the shed & let my wife handle it. She dont have to, eventually he'd stop stinking & I'd let him back in the house. But she is more sympathetic than I am.
I've had three occasions to use the peroxide/baking soda/soap recipe, and after all three uses I could let the dog into the house to sleep on his couch that night. It worked that well. The recipe was invented by a Chemist by the name of Paul Krebaum. It works by oxidizing the skunk spray. I am so glad I found that recipe as the current mutt can not resist the smelly little guys. The last time he got it he took it right to the face at a distance of about 3 feet, I wish I hadn't missed with that first shot.........anyways, it was pretty bad. Had to really take my time and work the stuff in slowly on his face to avoid his eyes, but when it was all over he was good to go.
