in search of a screw/ the saga continues

Post by pokey »

i have lost a side plate screw from an old redfield
peep sight. i was wondering if any of you gentlemen
[or ladies] would have such a thing, or know where
to look for same?

here's a pic i borrowed from another thread,
redfield.jpg
the two tiny ones holding the side plate indicator
are what i'm looking for. none of the usual suspects
seem to have them. i'm looking at buying a whole
sight off ebay and using it for parts. thought i'd
check here first though.

thanks, pokey

Just a thought, from an old scrounger, pokey - Have you tried the threads from the little screws that hold the sliding sight notch onto a Lyman #16 or Marble's "no-leaf" folding rear barrel open sight ?

Another, that comes to mind, would be the two screws that hold the sighting blade onto the longleaf of a Winchester rear barrel open sight.

I got the same screw at a gunshow from a vendor who sold old peeps and scopes. It's tighter pitch than 48 tpi and is smaller than a #6 screw.

Some hardware stores have large quantities of screws so there must be some source. Do you have a screw gauge? Maybe your local gunsmith does. Once you know the size you can get a screw. To long can be shortened and a cap head can be reshaped.

This is an issue that comes up all too often. I'd like to hear what you do/how this turns out.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Do a search for "Gary Fellers". He has just about anything & everything, for old sights.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I pulled the side plate screws from a couple of Redfield sights and tried my collection of itty bitty screws to see if I had one. Here is what I found.

1. A 5 is too large
2. A 3 is too small
..
That makes the screw a 4

My Starrett thread pitch gage says the screw is 48 tpi.

A 4-48 machine screws is a standard size, but not available in your local hardware store. You might try Brownells as they stock some pretty wierd gun screws. If not, you can search on line. You will probably have to buy a dozen or so and then shorten one to fit.

The easy solution is to drill and tap the hole to 6-48 which is a common gun mount screw. Caveat..On some Redfield sights with the push bottom elevation slide release, there is another such screw (with a smaller head) under the side plate just above the right hand side plate screws. With this set up, it might not be possible to open the hole up to a size 6 wire gage screw.

I darn near needed a screw myself. When measuring the threads, I droped mine and it took 15 minutes crawling around on the shop floor to find it. It seems like a fellow never learns to handle such small things over a box to catch it if it falls.

Sorry, but that is the best I can do for you. I don't have any spares

i have sent inquiries to the suggested people. thanks.

i have also been to the best local purveyor of screw and such.
these little guys seem to be 3/40 or so, they will thread into a
3/48 nut about 1.5 turns then lock up. i took the remaining screw
in with me and tried to drive the hardware people nuts. :D also tried
the metric stuff, no happiness.

i kinda thought all redfield side plate screws would be the same, but if some of you
are getting different measurements, maybe the search is going to be harder than
i had hoped.

thanks again, pokey

Only on Leverguns can you see a post "Pokey" is "in search of a screw" without it being a proposition of some sort... :?

Screw? Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you said "screwed". In that case we ALL got that last November :D

It pays to keep a 6-48 tap & die set on hand. Common screw to hold lots of things on where the weird ones can't be found. Its not as if we were doing a d&t job on a $30,000 Parker.--------Sixgun

Re: in search of a screw/ the saga continues

well.....

i went to the gun show today, and it was really a GUN show.
no benie babies, no chinese blowgun stuff, a few tshirts and
jewelry and the jerky ladies. kinda refreshing.

so i'm talking with an old fella about some sight parts i'd found
in one of his boxes of stuff. he says "i didn't mean to put that
box out, but if you really want those parts i suppose you could
have them ,,,,,, for 50$" i said he should just put them away,
so no one else was tempted.

just as i decided to leave i saw the tell tale round head adjustment
screws of a refield peep sticking up from another box on another
table. so i asked about it, the sight had a tag that read 27$.
i asked if he would take a 20 dollar bill, wound up spending 22$
on a complete sight. it is not one that fits my guns but will do
fine for parts. :D

thus ends the saga of the screw for now.
on to the next adventure.

An inexpensive solution, to a frustrating problem. You can sell the leftover sight on ebay and probably make a little profit.
