OT- was just reading a post on odd critters
On an earlier post about odd critters someone mentioned having heard a Bigfoot. I've never encountered such a thing but many people say they have, even a couple of men I know. What I would like to know is what do you think you would do if you were properly armed and while hunting, had the opportunity to make a killing shot on such a creature? Would proving they exist justify killing one. I understand, in some places like Fla. such creatures, weather real or imagined are protected by law.
Re: OT- was just reading a post on odd critters
As it is illegal I would only consider such a thing if forced to do so by a threat to my life. I would think that it likely has its vitals where mine are and would act accordingly.
Supposedly Teddy Roosevelt saw/heard a "bigfoot". However, I tend to discount such tales as entertaining stories and not much more.

IF they really existed, shooting them would be the last thing I'd do! That applies to the Yeti, Nessie, etc. Why destroy such an exiciting find, just to prove its existence?? Given the rarity of the creature, I'd want to learn a lot more about it.
And no, I am not a tree hugger, but why not enjoy God's unique and rare creatures for what they are, rather than killing it to prove a point?

Re: OT- was just reading a post on odd critters
Were I to encounter a big foot I would not harm a hair on it's body unless in self defense.
My reason is a bit different from most so bear with me.
As far as most bureaucrats go big foot does not exist, it's a myth. Good, lets keep it that way. If someone were to bust a cap on a big foot and prove it existed in such a manner it could not be swept under the rug, the feds would declare it an endangered species and close most if not all forests and wilderness areas to protect it.
That's all we need.

Oh heck Joe, we could always put a top hat and tails on the thing and tour the world showing it off. If that didn't work, we could forced-march it to Minnesota

I'd shoot one only in self-defense or in fear for my life.
And I'd hope to be able to shoot it with a big bore rifle. I have no confidence that buckshot would do anything more than make it mad.
Now don't poke too much fun about Bigfot, Sasquath/Skunk Ape or whatever you want to call them. There are more things in the woods and hills than any of us have ever seen.

You are right...it is unfair and cruel to compare them to BoBo ... they are a more honorable species.Doc Hudson wrote:Now don't poke too much fun about Bigfot, Sasquath/Skunk Ape or whatever you want to call them.

Having seen and heard some odd things in my life in and out of the forests, woods, cities and dark spots on the globe....
I'd shoot a crapload of pictures (former professional photographer) and only pull the trigger in self defense.

It would fall under big game and I would petition for a tag.
I would probably not shoot it and would definitely not tell anyone, lol.

That's kinda what I had in mind. Put him in a deadly toe hold until he agrees to go on the Tonight Show or if its a female just woo her with my charms.

Heck, this is Texas, bigfoot is not classified as a game animal by Texas Parks and Recreation so it's legal to shoot on sight by any legal means including spotlighting. I think one would make a heck of a full size mount.

Interesting topic. I know a gent who's credibility is beyond reproach who claims an encounter. Given the fossil evidence of Giganto, it is possible. I would not harm one unless forced. Best wishes, 1886.
