Levergun Winter Hunt In Texas. Directions added pg5

Post by RKrodle »

There is nothing scheduled at this time so I'm just kind of throwing it out there to see if anyone is interested. If there is enough interest we could get 86er to make it happen. If everyone wants to hunt like Rams, Goats and Hogs we could do it in the North Texas area, or if any of these animals plus the larger exotics are wanted, it could be done in Hondo. So location would depend on what everyone would want to hunt, it wouldn't be possible to do both locations at this point and time. Time would be between say, November and the end of February or so, depending on when we could get everyone coordinated. So what do you think, anyone want get together for some comradely and put Joe to work tracking down animals for us? We could even add some side competitions to see who can get a picture of Joe with a smile on his face. Now that would make for some bragging rights.

I think that I have something for you to look at. Check out my posting about the hunt. Tell me what that is on Joe's face.

Ricky - sound like fun to me! Could probably make a North Texas hunt, depending on NE, Central or NW location, and any unforseen conflict here on the farm. Hondo might be a little far. I'll be watching the forum to see if a hunt is put together for that time of year. Would like to take any of the animals cited for the NorTex hunt.

Goatguy, it would be NE of DFW. Depending on where your at it would be a run down I-30 and get off before Dallas. Near Greenville.

Ricky - Perfect!!! Might give me a chance to combine the hunt with a visit with my son and his family in Denton. My wife might be enticed to accompany us and try for a hog, if members of the opposite sex are welcome on these hunts. She shoots "real good" and is good company to boot.

Women and/or Children are especially welcome. We need more of both in the hunting fields.

For me Texas is home, even though these days I am having to work at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. I've been hunting East Tx since I adopted Texas as my home back in 1967.

I would be interested in hearing more about the property and the specifics of the hunt plans.

I usually hunt my little piece of heaven which is in Marion county about 10 miles East of Jefferson, but my farm is small, so if there's nothing much moving, when I still hunt I don't go too far before I reach one of the neighbor's fences.

If it comes to be, I would plan on using my old stand-by 348 Winchester.

Count me in on this one. I live near Canton, Texas, so NE Texas would be easy for me. I just picked up a new Browning m65 in .218 Bee that needs a trip. Wonder what a .218 hog load looks like?

You should come to Canton to our shop sometime to check out the things we do to lever guns, single shots, and certain handguns.

Do we have a wag on time frames - pre-Thanksgiving / post Thanksgiving / pre Christmas / New Years? I work with one other person, and I'm one deep in my area of speciality.

I've blooded the RedHawk, and now its time to blood the 629. I'd kinda like to go on foot, pistol in one hand, bowie in the other, hand grenades 'tween my teeth. I'd like to build a reputation as a slayer of porcine infidels!

Facilities - are we camping or "cabining" like Hondo?

Don't 'cha hate it when people ask direct, pointed questions? Just like p-bo does!

-Brian

p.s. Get me close enough and I'll test one of those "terry-chula" bullets on him.

I am interested in the hunt, and if she has the time off, Devonna might come along to actually hit something while I shoot AT something. I felt that Devonna and Chris Troskie's wife Sabina were treated as politely as one could as for on the hunt. The folks on this forum whom I have actually met face to face are total gentlemen.

I saw this post and figured I better cook something up just in case.

Here's what I can do based on the info in the preceeding post:

2 hours East of Dallas - 1 hour N.W. of Texarkana - US 30 is the main thoroughfare.
1 hog - Guaranteed. They run from 60 pounds all the way up to 250 pounds in this area.
On site cleaning facility for our use.
One full day of hunting whether at once or two 1/2 days.
$350 per person.

opportunity for second hog for $100 additional after everyone has tagged their first one.

Cabin lodging with shower, microwave, cooking area (bbq) available for $25 per person 6 max.
Camping on site in travel trailer or tent available.
Very nice hotel or very nice bed and breakfast available 10 miles from site.

Any firearm or archery equip okay.
$45 TX license required - or regular TX license will do.

Figure two days over a weekend. Maybe start hunting Fri afternoon, continue until everyone gets what they want or Sun afternoon, whichever comes first.

$150 deposit to reserve your spot.

WHEN? Early Dec, Mid Jan or anytime Feb. Let me know the concensus. Could run two hunts to accomodate everyone if it goes that way.

There's going to be 5 baited stands. Two of the stands can accomodate two people, ie: husband and wife or friends. I hope to have more people than the 7 that can be on the stands at once. What we'll do it rotate out. When one person kills a hog he/she comes out and sends another hunter in. We'll do this for at least a half day and then switch to spot and stalk - two hunters to one PH. When everyone has one, anyone who wants a second can start another rotation. Everyone will get a hog - it's a "guaranteed" hunt. Ok, so not everything is absolutely 100% but circumstantially the odds of getting one are 95%. If someone wanted a goat or ram I need to know asap. There are literally a handful of left-overs on the property that have'nt been pursued or bothered. We can take 'em for the same price but I need to know so nobody talks us into taking one in the meantime. Please start sending Ricky your $150 deposits.

If everybody is willing - weather permitting, let's do a campout and plan on cooking and everything there. It'll be cold that time of year - enough to appreciate a nice fire, etc.

Smitty and I were just talking about this - looking forward to another levergun hunt! :D

Maybe it is a small world, but is it the place in Red River County? I am from there and have killed a NE Texas hog, with a 255 Keith load my Grandpa fellow board member JerryB cooked up for me. He calls it "hog medicine". Anyway my old step-dad use to trap hogs off our place on Lake Lennox and sell to a similar outfit.

I am down if the dates are around that time. IM me if you are interested in collecting some hogs, the trap is still out on the place.

FWiedner, I've never had the guy I normally use make any breakfast type sausage for me. But I'll ask around and find someone. I know CRS has someone in the Dallas area that he uses so I'll ask him also. It's starting to shape up for a good hunt, I hope you can make it.

I'm out in Azle (West of Ft Worth, North of Weatherford) and have had Plantation Meats here make breakfast sausage for me the last three years. It is fantastic sausage, the best I've ever had.

Guy and Gals:

I need you to get the deposits to Ricky. This place I am going to have you hunt will accomodate around 10 people. We have 13 people that said "Maybe". In fairness, the 1st 10 deposits to Ricky will be confirmed for sure. After that I will have to evaluate just how many more there are and the circumstances. We have OSOK, Smitty, 2ndovc and Warhawk's deposits. The balance will be due on or before January 10th. If you'd like to send full payment that would make things easier for Ricky. Please chime in to confirm your attendance!

Thanks!

I indicated an interest, but conditions dictate that I withdraw my name.
Among other things, in April I sent my model "71" to MaconGunStocks and when it was returned to me with its new butt stock, it was not what had been agreed to in writing.
Rifle was returned to Macon (been there about another 2 months now) for corrective work.
I was recently told that they could not predict or forecast when I would get my rifle back.
Good luck to all.

P.S. OK, the check is written and in an envelope, will go out with tomorrow's post.

P.P.S ...And I put it in the mail box... :o
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
