OT: blackhawk question

Post by FLINT »

Hey guys,

This summer I got a new ruger blackhawk in .41 mag and to make a long story short, I discovered before I ever shot it that one of the chambers was out of round. So I sent it back to ruger and I just got it back on tuesday with a new cylinder installed.

The chambers all seem well so far, but I can perceive a very slight amount of front-back play in the cylinder. Now when I hold the hammer back and also squeeze the trigger - I believe this is called 'lock up' there is absolutely NO front/back or side/side play at all - its absolutely tight.

so my question is, should i be concerned about the little front/back play that I can feel when its not locked up? I want to shoot this thing soon, but want to make sure its safe first.

Thanks!

i just checked my three screw 41 and it has play both with the hammer cocked and down, and i have no fear of shooting it with heavy loads;my predator also has some movement, and it has seen some heavy loads also. if you're concerned send it to me and i'll be glad to wring it out for you.

Nope, that's totally typical of single actions, and after you've put a few hundred rounds through it it will likely have taken a set which is a couple thousandths of an inch more than you feel now. Nothing to worry about. There are very few manufacturers which build them without a little cylinder play that you can feel. But you will pay more for those brands. Substantially more.

Hey guys,
Hey Flint,

This summer I got a new ruger blackhawk in .41 mag and to make a long story short, I discovered before I ever shot it that one of the chambers was out of round. So I sent it back to ruger and I just got it back on tuesday with a new cylinder installed.
Only one chamber? You were lucky. On both the cylinders for my 45 Colt several throats were out of round. Reaming them fixed it thankfully.

The chambers all seem well so far, but I can perceive a very slight amount of front-back play in the cylinder. Now when I hold the hammer back and also squeeze the trigger - I believe this is called 'lock up' there is absolutely NO front/back or side/side play at all - its absolutely tight.
The front to back movement is called "end shake". There are tolerances for this and I believe Ruger's is a bit generous. I've been told that their tolerance is .000" to .005". That is too much for me and many of those who shoot a lot. I prefer my Rugers to have no more than .002" end shake. The problem with end shake is that if you have some, it will eventually create more as the cylinder slams back and forth. So the less there is to start, the less it will develop as time and rounds add up.
When you hold the hammer all the way back you are actually causing a binding situation. The pawl (hand) is attached to the hammer. The trigger has zero to do with the lock up. All it does is trip the hammer and raise the transfer bar. As you crank the hammer back the pawl will rotate the cylinder up against the cylinder latch ( bolt ) and when it can't rotate any more it will shove it forward. This is not what happens when you cock the gun and shoot it.
When cocked the pawl rotates the cylinder until the latch locks in and then you stop pulling the hammer back. At that point you will have some end shake, and some rotational play. That is perfectly normal and preferable. Rugers need a bit of play to allow the chamber to line up with the bore as the gun fires. They are not line bored to perfect alignment, so if all play is removed you very well may end up with an out of alignment condition.

so my question is, should i be concerned about the little front/back play that I can feel when its not locked up? I want to shoot this thing soon, but want to make sure its safe first.
No, there is no reason to be concerned. The gun just came back from Ruger. They would not send out an unsafe gun. The liability factory flatly prohibits them from doing that. Pack that hog laig up and go burn some powder.
You'll probably find it's at least three times as accurate as you are. That's my findings anywho.

Thanks!

Hey,

Thanks a lot guys. I feel much better now. I've ordered dies, brass, some 210gr. XTPs and a friend gave me some H110 powder, so I should be ready to try her out pretty soon.

Haha, Hobie, your pretty close, but not that close. if this thing is loud enough that you can hear it I'm in trouble!! :o
