Puma 357 mag

Looked at a Puma 357 mag at Big 5 store today. liked everything but the safety. it sits on top and looks like stuff. looks very flimsy and weak.

Are all the Pumas like this?

It's on sale for $399

My local Big5 still carries Marlin in that caliber (and .44 Mag, .357Mag)...But I haven't seen them on sale as much as they seem to be pushing Puma.

All the LSI Puma have that safety and so do the new EMF and Navy Arms 92s all made by Rossi but you might still find new old stock EMFs on Gunbroker etc. without the safety, or remove the safety and install a filler plug from STEVE YOUNG.

One would think you hadn't been on the forum and seen that Steve Young of Steves Gunz (aka Nate Kiowa Jones) has a neat little replacement for that ugly darn "safety".

I probably have seen it, but never was even curious about the import levers.

I also noticed it was a rebounding hammer, not half cock.

I may just have to wait and save for another marlin.

I don't think Rossi would do that... It would require too many changes in their production line.

The Puma at my pusher's is a new one and it's not rebounding...

Steve can give us the straight skinny...

None of the rossi 92's have a rebounding hammer. The current ones do have firing pin blocking safety there on top the bolt, but all still have the 1/4 cock safety on the hammer as well.

Maybe I didn't see it right, but the hammer wouldn't lock back anywhere but full cock in this one.

If that funky safey is ALL there is tht's just plain weird.

Are you guys saying they're half cock? It really didn't feel like it.

I did like the fit and feel of the rifle, and of course Big 5 ALWAYS has the actions closed with zip ties.

How is the action smoothness compared to the marlin?

What is the twist rate on the Puma 44 mag?

I cannot address the newer Rossi 92's but my 16inch 357 is my 'go to gun" for hunting, shooting ,or as a self defense carbine.It is as smooth as silk.If you were to buy one, Nate Kiowa Jones can work his magic on it and it will amaze you. Doug

I have had a heck of a time finding used Pumas for sale. All I ever come up with are NIB stuff. Are they that nice? Am I not looking hard enough(doubtful)?

Sometimes, with the safety on you won't notice the 1/4 cock notch. This is because the blocked firing pin has the hammer pushed slightly back.

A friend at work tried to get me to buy a Rossi made .357 Lever for a long time, starting about 1980. Being confused about the truth, I didn't even consider it until finding all the information in Paco's Leverguns Forum.

I now have two .357 M92s, one being a used EMF brand, pre-safety, that was made by Rossi but has the better sights & wood, and I don't know what else. I was lucky to find this, and it is sweet and definitely worth saving to have Steve tune it for me.

I've handled a Marlin .357, and if I couldn't have a tuned M92, then I'd want a Marlin. A good running Winchester M94 .357 could also work, but I really prefer the M92.

And I almost never see any used Rossi made M92s for sale around here.

I forgot to mention. Pulling that hammer to half cock, and then to full cock, sounds GREAT

I long ago gave up on finding a used '92 .357. Bought a new one many, many years ago, well back in the pre-safety days. Then (still years ago) found a buy on a new one in stainless with the regular loading AND loading like a .22. It scratched an itch I didn't even know 'till then existed - even with that ugly safety. So I ended up with still another new one.
Neither are new now! Both shoot great. As a friend says, "Definitely minute of deer!"

You can see the plug I bought off Mr. Young to replace the safety. Really nice shooter. I bought Mr. Young's DVD but I haven't gotten the nerve up to modify it. My wife just loves it.

That is another thing about these. The recoil is about nothing, and my wife can handle it. I can't say that about the Remington 870...
