Marlin 336 restoration/alteration project PICS.

Post by 1886 »

I found this circa 1976 336 .35 Rem. some time ago. It was in need of some T.L.C. The wood was weathered and well used. There was much minor pitting on each side of the receiver. The action was good and tight and the bore was perfect. A good price made this gun a prime candidate for an over haul. Multiple coats of tung oil made the wood nice and pretty. We shortened the barrel and mag. tube to 18", lightly tuned the action and trigger. No race tuning here just some light, practical massaging. A trip to the buffing wheel and reblue tank rounded out the project. The final touch is a Lyman receiver sight. I took her to the range this A.M. for a little work out. My favorite, heavy duty cast load for modern Marlin 336 .35 Rem. was in tow. A Mt.Baldy 230gr wide flat nose gas check sized .359", Rem. brass, a healthy dose of H-4895, and Rem. 2 1/2 primers. Velocity runs at 2100f.p.s. adjusted to the muzzle. Target was shot at 50yrds from the bench. 1886

Very nice Gary!!

I redid one very similar for Kid #2 for Christmas this year also in .35Rem.

Been looking for another one just like it. Becoming a big fan of the .35R

Thanks J. I wanted to replace the forearm band with a newer, "stud installed" model. I could not get the band pin to fit properly. I will have to work on that later. The barrel band stud hides a small amount of pitting that we forgot to buff.? 1886.

:D That looks great and shoots good groups. If it were me I would put a new front sight on it with a gold bead. But that is up to you. Over all I would say that is a very good job. :D

Did you slim up the forend or did it come that way. I personally like them wider, but that's just me. :P

Gary, That is a great looking rifle and apparently a good shooter too. I take it that is the one you told me about some time back. You have to love those 35s.

Here's the one I did.

Kid #2 liked my .450M set up w/ a scout scope but just isn't big enough to handle
the recoil so I bought the .35 and did it up the same way.

It has a Lyman white bead or as the beautiful people say, "faux ivory". The bead made it a little tough on the white pizza box background. The bead shows up well in the dark or against the fall hide of a northern whitetail. 1886.

That is the way it came from the factory. Some guys do prefer the perch belly forearm. 1886.

Hi, This one is a different rifle but we copied it exactly. A buddy talked me out of the original. 1886.

The scope is an El Cheapo Simmons pistol scope on an XS mount and Gander Mountain
(Weaver) rings turned backwards. Needed a little extra eye relief because of the pistol scope.

I wanted to be sure he liked the scout set up before I spent the money on a Leupold or Burris
scout/IER scope.

So far he loves the thing, just wish I could get his older brother into something other than a .22!
