I like the one in the opening titles of "For a Few Dollars More", sure, it's just animation, but it works.

Anybody ever see the shots "made" by Burt Lancaster in "Valdez is Coming?"

FWeidner, that is a great clip, thanks for that.
I might have to put that as a favorite, even though I had forgotten about that one!
I like the quigly shots where he gets two guys with one, gus' chicken shot, and though not a western, the long shots with a flinter in last of Mohecans.

Bizzare. First, he's pouring powder down the barrel for the initial load. Then, he's firing in quick succession apparently using cartridges ... without the slightest bit of recoil. Not the best technical advice on that scene.FWiedner wrote:Anybody ever see the shots "made" by Burt Lancaster in "Valdez is Coming?"

Watch a little closer, he's making hand-loads, and near as I can tell, actually does it the right way.Rimfire McNutjob wrote:Bizzare. First, he's pouring powder down the barrel for the initial load. I thought Hawkeye's long range flinter shots (the silk patch gives me 30 more yards) as he covers a friend's escape from Ft Henry.... Heck of a Flash/Bang elapsed time

Guys Guys Guys, your all lame, any hollywood hero can do it standing on the ground and using a rifle. The best long shots of all cinema time are Roy Rodgers and the lone ranger. I have with my own eyes seen both of them shoot the gun out of a bad guys hand at distances from 20 -150 yards, while riding at a full gallop and using Colt SAA's now who is this Quigley guy think he is. Thanks for the memories Tom
a Pennsylvanian who has been accused of clinging to my religion and my guns......Good assessment skills.

Yep, my favorite too.

Clint Eastwood shooting the rope that was around Tuco's neck (above "Unkown's grave) was also a good one in the Good, bad, and the Ugly

I like Duval's, mainly because of how it was preceded with the shots falling short. Hilarious!

Gabby Hays saving Duke Wayne by shooting the BG off a barn roof from horseback with his Colt in (I believe) "Blue Steel."
I liked the original three nominees too.

I'm kinda partial to the shot by William Munny (sp?) with the Spencer carbine in "Unforgiven". Gutshot that cowboy!

First is "Valdez", loading his rounds then using them. The rest were good but that one is classic.

Bob Valdez, one t'ousan' yards, of course!
That is my oldest memory of a long shot, from when I was a kid.
Glen Campbell's shot in True Grit ranks up there, too; another one from when I was a kid.
These shots are the reason I like the 19th-Century single shots more than lever-action repeaters, from a purely sentimental point of view, to this day. Notably, when I started buying fun rifles, I bought a Browning 1885 before I bought my first Winchester '94 or BLR.

One of the longest, maybe the greatest shots of all time was by the Waco Kid (Gene Wilder) in Blazing Saddles touching off the dynamite in the fake Rock Ridge, with a pistol no less.....

One of you computer genius types needs to go to you tube and hunt up The Hunting Party with Gene Hackman, select the massacre at the watering hole scene, and put the link here, seems like this one is pretty much unknown.
Re: My favorite "long range shot" in a Western.
the final scene in the wild bunch. long range shot by john waynes' son on a buck in big jake. robert denerio shooting over a buck in the deer hunter and saying okay. the smirk on clint eastwoods face when held the .44 to bankrobbers' head and pulled the trigger. val kilmer fanning his colt in the ok corral shootout in thombstone. final scence in the good, bad ,ugly, previously mentioned.
Re: My favorite "long range shot" in a Western.
The scene in GBU where Lee Van Cleef first shoots the bad guy's (with the bad teeth) horse out from under him at a ful gallop, then lets the bad guy fire 3-4 unanswered shots at him, then puts a stock on a buntline special and drops the guy.woo-hoo.followed by the shootin in Valdez followed by Rooster putting the reins in his teeth, rolling the levergun around, drawing his pistole and yelling at Ned "Fill yore hand u ***." My kind of men,my kind of shootin.bj

James Garner as Captain Woodrow Call in "Streets of Laredo" where he shoots down at Mox Mox and his crew from a high bluff, with his Henry rifle. Seemed realistic to me.
