OJ,

My mom had a little girl Mastiff, her name was Baby.
At 2 years old she died in my arms of an epileptic seizure.
What a sweetheart! What a great friend, and wonderful member of the family!

I know how your heart must be broken, and mine goes out to you today.

I hope you bring a new pup into your life soon. It will help you to heal, though you'll never forget.

Sorry to hear that OJ. We've lost some of our dogs along the way and the comforting factor for us is that we have a small pet cemetery where we bury them.

Thanks for the kind words and help, guys. The thing that made this so hard for all of us was the rapidity of progress of her cancer - one day she was running and bossing her 250# litter mate brother around - in less than two weeks she couldn't walk without help. She is being cremated and her ashes will join the eight others that went before her - buried in our back yard. We are all devastated - big bro seems to be doing the best of all of us.

Image

Despite her being "in charge" of him (from the time of birth, I think), he loved her also as she really loved him -

OJ,

You have my deepest sympathies. I've been in your position and will be again before many more years. Sometimes only the belief that I will one day be reunited with my four-footed kids it the only think that keeps me going.

God Bless all of you,

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It's always a hard time when a man has to say goodbye to his faithful companion. It's been over a year since I and my wife and kids stood in the snow on a bleak December day down by the field and buried the best dog I ever had. I still feel bad about it.

I feel your loss especially keenly having just lost a companion a month ago. Baby was a 100 lb. German Shepherd, 12 years old , and she's buried in the back yard she loved so well, to keep eternal vigil over her people. I guess somehow it's in God's great plan to give dogs such different lifespans than humans, but I, for one, believe that there's room for dogs in Heaven. So sorry for your loss.

Re: HAD TO PUT MY LITTLE GIRL TO SLEEP

Post by Blaine »

The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

I sure appreciate the support here, guys. We showed Mastiffs for years until I retired from doing surgery and it's never any easier - these are wonderful dogs but, unfortunately under normal circumstances (no cancers - only one before some 20 years ago) they have a relatively short life span of 9 - 10 years average - for us at least.

She is being cremated and her remains will be buried in our back yard with the nine now there. The pain is easing for me a little but, I think it is just becoming reality to her big bro now - he follows me everywhere not letting me even get more than a few feet away from him - giving him some support has diverted pain away from us somewhat.

Image

He is a big help to us - as you all have been - thanks again for your support - I'm sure glad I'm a member of a group like this :!:

I so well know how you feel. We had to put our sweet little Cocker, Sophie, to sleep on 28 June, one month shy of her 15th birthday. It was a rough several days afterward, too. Not hearing the click of her nails on the hardwood floor, the snores of her sleeping, or her constant following of us wherever we went made her loss even worse. I wrapped her in her favorite blanket and put her 4' down in the back yard. Keep the memories of the good times with you.

Fellow and his dog are walking down this dusty road when they come upon a beautiful golden gate with some lovely green grass behind it.Fellow is sitting behind the gate reading a book.Guy and dog approach and guy asks if he can come in and rest a bit and get he and his dog some water.Man looks up and says "Sir,u are more than welcome.U can come in and stay as long as u wish, rest, and drink all the water u want. However, ur dog cant come in>"Fellow looks at his dog, looks back at the man and says "Well I guess we will move on".Man says,"Sir,this is heaven.U need to come on in."Guy looks shocked, but he and his dog turn away.

They move on down the dusty road for a long time and then come upon a rusty old iron gate, open and swinging in the breeze. There is lots of green grass as well, and a rather shabby looking guy sitting on the grass reading abook.Fellow and his dog approach and fellow says,"Excuse me sir but my dog and I have travelled a long way together and are very tired and thirsty. Can we come in,rest and get a drink of water?" The man gets up,extends his hand and says"Certainly.u and ur dog come on in.There is plenty of grass and shade for u to rest in,there is a pump with some fresh water over there and u will find a tin pot to draw up some water for ur dog.Stay as long as u like." "thanks" says the fellow. "My dog and I stopped down the road a ways at a place called heaven but the man at the gate said I could come in but my dog couldnt". The shabbily dressed man smiled at the fellow, patted the dog on the head and said,"Yes,I know.We get a lot of business from down there."

As a senior citizen and dog/cat owner for most of my 70 years,I have lost many of my best friends along the way.The people who say pets cant go to heaven should look into the eyes of my current 6 rescued pooches and 7 rescued cats and tell me that to my face.I dont believe they could. My sincere condolences on ur loss and I am sure u will see her again some day.BJ
