So does black powder, but it's hard on the grill
Re: OT – Back To Real Grilling For Me.
I did the same thing last year. I went out and bought a cheap charcoal grill and haven't used the gas grill sense. The food just taste so much better to me.

At one time, 20 years ago, I had a connection in Oregon that I could get tons of briquettes for free, enough to give all you guys several bags every summer. Those were the good old days, those Kingsford Mesquitte's, hard to beat. Nice set up you have for sure. Where's the beef?
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.

I've never given into the dark side. But last year when I needed a new grill, it took a bit of searching to find a charcoal burner. I picked up one that also doubles as a smoker, as it has a small compartment on the side for smoking or indirect cooking. Darned thing is made out of cast iron and heavy as all get out. This one will probably out live me.

I sure do like your choice of fuel, since I started using that I have not bought any regular charcoal. This is just like cooking over wood with out the wait. Two years ago I went up behind the barn and got and old gas grill and took it apart, and built a charcoal grill out it. Now I don't use the gas grill much.

I mostly use our Weber gas grill, but do still have the old Weber Kettle for really "fine" work, like prime ribs and slow cooked ducks and geese. Nothing beats charcoal as a cooking medium. For that matter, a dutch oven does even better. Check out this rib roast from our Yosemite trip of a couple weeks ago.
How about a baked brie? Covered in home rolled dough and 1 hr the dutch oven. Yummmm, an excellent hors d'oeuvre. Our Yosemite trips are epicurian delights. Goor-met food all the way.
OK, one more. The falls were extra spectacular during the second week of June. Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls.

forget charcoal, just use wood! That's the best flavor. And forget about lighter fluid, make a fire fer crissake!

Re: OT – Back To Real Grilling For Me.
We often cook with wood when camping, so I usually bring along about 1/4 cord of mixed pear and oak. With a nearly constant source, it's easy to take advantage of wood. We love to have a communal fire in the evening and sit around swapping lies and imbibing a bit. Breakfasts consist of full grease, bacon, chorizo, spicy ground venison sausage, linguica, eggs, tortillas, and what have you, all cooked on a large griddle over a 3 burner stove. There are also cut up melons, strawberries, mangoes and papayas, pears, and whatever other fruit comes along. Dessert is usually a cherry, peach, or apple cobbler, done up in a dutch oven, of course. There are usually four of them around the fire. Lining the oven with foil helps in cleaning up.
