I'm not sure that I would agree with you fella's on it being way-way overvalued. Figure that early 1899 Savages garner about the same as early 1894 Winchesters, then think about what that rifle would bring in that outstanding condition with those extras, and that caliber, lettered and verified if it were an 1894 Winchester. That rifle is in exceptional condition, and I would venture that options such as engraving and deluxe walnut, and checkering of that caliber were much rarer on Savages than Winchesters. He may be a couple of thousand high, but I think that rifle is well worth the 12-15K range. If I had that kind of cash laying around for guns, I would throw an offer his way.

Kansas Ed is right. That's one reason I don't have any old Winchesters even remotely close to that condition in my modest collection.

What a beautiful rifle. While I don't see me ever owning anything like this, just suppose you find $17K in the sofa cushions and you acquire the piece. What would you do with it? Seriously, do you put it away for future generations? Shoot it? Lovingly fondle it every now and then? I truly don't know what I would do. Fortunately (or not

), I don't foresee me ever having this dilemma...

I'm a lot like KirkD, I try not to own firearms I wouldn't shoot...but that piece IMO is better than money in the 401K fund. Several years ago, we ran across a fella at the Tulsa show who was giving an OUTLANDISH SUM for a high grade Iver Johnson single shot shotgun. I mean many thousands of dollars here. See he collected Iver Johnsons, and this particular shotgun was in a difficult gauge to find (Since he was short on cash, we happened to make a very nice bargain on an 1886 Winchester he had)....so the moral of the story is that no matter what it is, someone somewhere collects it, and is worth something to someone.

I can't afford it, but I sure don't think it's overpriced much. If it was at one of the big auctions like Julia's or RI I bet it would go pretty close to that starting price. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
