Hunting turkey with my 25-20s.

Post by rangerider7 »

I'm going turkey hunting today. I like to use my 25-20 levers. One is a old Marlin 94 and the other is an old Winchester 1892. I try and shoot them in the head at about 50 yards or less. If I hit, breast of turkey and gravy that evening. If I miss, no fuss with cleaning. All I have called up so far are young birds. :| I usually get one or two birds a year. Not so many this year.

I'd never seen let alone shot a 25-20 until I attended the Tonasket silhouette shoot with Wind. He brought a '92 in 25-20 and was gracious to let me shoot it more than once. Quite the varmint round.

That looks like a dandy pair of rifles. I wish we could use rifles for turkey here.

Sadly, none of my 25-20s will ever kill a turkey in CA. Shotguns and air rifles are the only tools allowed. Go get 'em, rangerider. :)

Called up 3 jakes. That's all I'm seeing or hearing. I think the droughts has something to do with the tom population. I don't shoot jakes; Let them grow. I'll go Wednesday and try again. It's always fun whether I get one or not. :D

Funny you should say that because, we are
having a pretty good dought here in central Florida....Our club sits on a
ridge with a bunch of ponds, which are all empty...
All the gobblers seem to be across the road in the
river bottom...First gobble sunday morning was
right across the road in the other lease...I set up near
the road...and every time the bird got close to the road...
a car or truck would go by and push him back in the woods...
that must have happened 5 or 6 time....
Eventually he lost interest in me and went back
to the river bottom...yelling his head off the entire way...
I guess I was just not sexy enough for him that morning...
Otherwise all I have seen are are 2 year olds and jakes...

The first one I called opening day was a two year old. I don't shoot them ether. I got a 5 year old with double beards about 10 inches long. It weighed close to thirty pounds. The record that year for this county. It has to be a real good Tom for me to shoot it these days. :D

Very nice old 25-20's. It's always enjoyable to see old rifles like those. Thanks for posting.

Wish I could hunt turkeys with a rifle once. Looks like a great combo you have. Got a 22 lb bird on Fri. Going in the frier this week-can't wait. My brother lives in Tx. Seems he is overseas or somewhere else during turkey season. A Rio would look real nice next to my Easterns and Merriams. Good luck RR
