1944 Winchester front barrel band screw

Post by Dusty Balz »

Howdy,

I picked up a 1944 Winchester 94. it was missing a front barrel band screw, a friend sent me a barrel band and screw he had laying around (not using the band). I tried placing the screw and it wouldn't fit. I was able to tap the band back and looked at the notch (it's at the bottom of the barrel) and tried to see if the screw would work in the notch, no go, the screw was too thick.

DOes anyone know if the older rifles have a thinner screw for the barrel band?

Thanks for looking

Dusty

The barrel band screws on older Winchesters (92's, 94's) are 4-56 TPI. I don't know if all Winchesters are the same though.

If the gun you have is a 1944 model year, it's probably a flat band, I am only guessing but I suspect that the screw you have came off of a standard barrel band, instead of a flat Band. They are probably different.

Well, I was probably wrong, as I went and looked at the flat band I have vs. two other pre-64's, I have, and the screws look to be the same size.

Pards

thanks for looking, she doesn't have a flat band, and the the barrel band screw I tried came with a barrel band, I want to keep the orginal band, but the screew I have is too big to fit through the notch between the barrel and the mag tube. I can get a toothpick through with no trouble, not that it helps me any :)

From memory, I believe the screw should be about .110-.115" if it is the old style, if there is more than one size.

Dusty,

I've had several pre-64s and have replaced the barrel band screws with what ever the local gun smith had. In the late 70s they came out with one that had a thicker threaded shank with a larger tapered end towards the screw head. My 1980 Trapper has one like that. All my others have the regular looking screw that appears to be the same diameter but only varies in how much of the screw is threaded.

Have you tried Numrich http://www.gunpartscorp.com/?
Or
Winchester Bobs http://winchesterbob.com/?
