Help needed with Colt Custom shop

Hi, I want to order a colt saa from the colt custom shop. Can someone just call them up--- how do you get everthing in writing so they don"t make a mistake--Do you have to pay 100% all at once. Anybody deal with them have any tips? Thanks ahead of time BOB

If you're not a dealer, you'll need to get an FFL involved, as Colt wont sell directly to the public. You can call them to discuss what you'd like, but then the dealer will need to be the middle man to complete the transaction.

I would type up a letter, describing in minute detail every single thing you want, including the info regarding your receiving FFL, and be prepared to send it to them as an order/contract with at least a 50% deposit check - after calling them to confirm everything, including the deposit amount.

In 2008 i was going to purchase a 45 caliber SAA from the Colt Custom Shop for my 45th birthday before the economy turned. I made more than a few calls to the custom shop, non of which were returned. My usual FFL seemed uninterested when I both emailed him with what I wanted, and spoke to him on the phone. He said he'd look into it but he never called me back. Anyway, I called Legendary Guns asking for help. They had a gentleman who's name I don't remember call me back. He was very helpfull. After telling him what I wanted, he called Colt asking if it was possible for that configuration. I believe that same day, I got a call from Colt asking for a little more information. The man was nice enough to call me and helped me to understamd what exactly to order. What I did learn that might be helpful to you, was that you must have your dealer order for you. As far as cost, Colt wouldn't even talk money, they said the price would be set by the dealer. I never went further than that, so I don't any information about the deposit. I don't remember what the build time was, but I think that it was closer to one year than it was to six months. I hope this helps some, good luck.

I have experience with the Custom Shop.

Find a Colt dealer who specializes in custom orders. You must detail how you want your piece made, there are many extras that can be had, all have a price added to the initial standard. Once you place the order, and usually a 50 % down is required, Colt will send a confirmation to the dealer. Make sure this is what you are ordering and all extra's are verified.
A custom order will take 6 months to a year.
It is important that you deal with an experienced Colt dealer. My dealer kept me informed thru-out the entire process.
