My new Marlin 338MX and 338MXLR

Post by 6pt-sika »

My Marlin 338MX has been at my dealers for a few weeks now and was waiting for the 338MXLR to get there yesterday before I did the paperwork today !

While I was waiting for the state call in to go thru I mounted a Leupold Vari XIII 4.5-14 on top of the 338MXLR and a Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20 on top the 338MX . I plan to use the 4.5-14 on the 338MXLR next season but the 6.5-20 on the 338MX is just there to shoot it some next week !

Yep, break 'em in right. Just throw 'em in the bed of the truck.

OK, I like the looks of both rifles for the most part, but I really like the stainless - laminated look for some reason.

What cha gonna hunt with 'em?

Does the 338MX feel about the same weight and balance as the 444 ? I haven't found one to pick up yet.

They'll both most likely kill a Virginia whitetail next season .

After that the moon and my wallet are the limit !

Which in reality means they may kill a couple more Virginia whitetails

To me the 338MX feels the most like the 308MX .

I have the XLR's and the blued 22" versions in 308 , 338 , 444 , 45-70 and 450 . And all of them feel ever so slightly better in the 22" models . But it's not something you'll notice unless you have both side by side with about the same scope mounted . Nothing against the stainless ones as I like them well enough but they are just a hair different in the balance point .

Wow. Very nice! Looking forward to the range report. :) That's a very good caliber IMHO - very similar to .356 Win but if you don't have a .356 then this is the one.

So, why two rifles in the same caliber at once? I thought I was a gun nut, but I usually get different models, calibers.... Is this like matching pairs of revolvers? :P

Why not two of the same caliber ?

I have a pair of Marlin 336ER's in 356 Win , a pair of 308 Marlin Express , four Marlin's in 35 Rem , a dozen Marlin's in 444 .

Its gotta be the angle I think.
I believe the XLR version has a 24" pipe & the MX a 22".

Guys got a dozen 444's & expects me to believe 2 of anythings enough.

Now that is an injustice.

Looking forward to the range report when you get some shells to burn threw them. Is brass available yet or are you stuck with factory for right now?

I have four boxes on order thru my dealer who got me the rifles . I also called the local Gander Mountain in Fredricksburg Virginia this morning to see if they had any ammo on hand . The person who answered the phone told me they ahd none and were not sure when they would get any ammo or rifles for that matter . I am heading down that way tonight and happen to have a gift certificate , so i was planning to burn it up on two boxes of ammo .

Those are nice rifles (well, they kinda look like most Marlins in those configurations) :D

I am anxious to hear your opinions of the accuracy, and eventually the lethality of the bullets. Please keep us updated!

Hi,

Do you test it to 200 to 250m? Are they good to that distance? Would like to use lever gun to hunt some gams and corsican rams in French Alps and Pyrénnées where shots can be 300 meters long and often in windy conditions after some climbing and hard walking?
Thank you.
