I started this thread, about .45 Colt blackpowder/round ball loads:

http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... ds#p157683

What I didn't get into, at the time was BP/RB loads for my .45-70.

I used Goex FFFg loads, with the 140gr/ .457 RB, ranging fom 5 to 15 grains.
In all cases - the ball MUST be seated against the powder.
I used a hardwood dowel and a vise, but I suppose a mallet could be used ILO of having an extended seating plug made for a bullet seating/crimp die.
I then put a dollop of Ox-Yoke Bore Butter in the case mouth, and pressed that down against the face of the RB as best I could - to help lessen fouling.

The 5gr loads were a lot like shooting a .22, while the 15gr loads more like a .357 from the 22" barrel of my Marlin 1895.
