I've been looking for and just bought....

Post by mod71alaska »

...a "Bofors" Sako Finnwolf .308 Win. lever action rifle with a 4 digit serial number in mint, unfired condition. The early Finnwolf .308 Win. with the Bofors (Finish) steel barrel is considered by many to be one of the most accurate lever action rifles ever made.

What have I done??? :o Hey, you Winchesters in the safe move over and be nice! It's still a lever action and just one rifle. (Shhhh...not a word to the Winchesters but I'm also looking for an early Finnwolf in .243. I'm sure the old Winchesters will come around to the idea...they just need some time!)

I haven't been this excited about a new rifle in a long time. :D :D :D

Wow,
It's a beauty. You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I never heard of that brand before. Could you share a little more, maybe like where manufactured, approx. year, etc?

I've used two that were in .308. We used Norma ammunition and they each shot very tight groups at 100 yards. That is a very nice rifle! I wish you much luck with it!

Hi Dave,

Original Sako rifles were handmade in Finland. Like most rifle manufacturers, Sako has gone through several iterations over the last 40 plus years. Similar to the "prewar" and pre/post 1964 Winchester demarcations for quality and collectibility, the "original" Finish Sako rifle is known as "pre-Garcia" and dates up to about 1972. After the Garcia period, Sako rifles were imported by Stoeger Industries and now Sako is connected to the Beretta company. The "pre-Garcia" Sako with the barrel stamped "Bofors" for the Finish steel that was used is highly sought after. The lever action Finnwolf .308 I just bought dates to the late 1960s and the model is no longer made.

Like other early period handmade rifles, an early Sako truly is a beautiful rifle!

Beautiful rifle. I have only seen one at the Tulsa show and I thought it was one of the best looking levers, plus I had heard that they really were accurate. You got a find!! :D

Thats a great looking rifle. You should be excited.
I've read a small article by Wilf Pyle about the Sako Finnwolf.
This rifle was made between 1964 and 1972 and chambered in
.243, .244 and .308.It has a 23in. barrel and weighs in at 6 3/4 lbs.
Its a hammerless design w/ short throw lever, side ejection,4 shot detachable mag and cross bolt safety.Sold at a bit over 200.00 in 1965.Not to shabby!
Your a lucky man,Good luck

mod71alaska,
That's a beautiful rifle.

On that other subject... I haven't forgotten your request... but, still haven't heard where the forends to match the stocks I ordered are. Still awaiting an email. (He's actually reluctant to sell these three stocks, so I'm being SUPER patient!)

That is indeed a beautiful rifle. I've shot only one. It was the 243 and I worked up loads for it for a friend of mine who wound up using it shooting silhouette league! That was a very good shooting rifle. He had many other rifles to choose from but chose the Finnwolf because it was so easy to shoot offhand. After handling it a little, I could see he was right. They are extremely well made guns.

Nice looking rifle. That's set up for a scope and with that butt stock it'll look great with a scope on it. I don't normally like a scope on a lever action but that stock begs for it. GREAT FIND!!!! Nice wood with beautiful grain.
