Marlin Model 30 price check

Post by Moonlitin »

I found a used Marlin model 30 at a local shop last week. It's a 30-30, with a micro groove barrel, and a cross bolt safety, so I think it's the model 30AS. From what I could find out after doing a few quick searches, the model 30AS seems to be a "plain Jane" version of the model 336, but mechanically the same. It was in good shape, but I couldn't look at the bore as the lever was zip tied shut. The asking price was $269. Can anyone tell me more about the model 30AS?

Thanks

Moonlitin, As you said, the 30AS was a 20 in carbine with a 6 shot magazine with a walnut "finished" hardwood stock. Introduced in 1985(sold new for $344 MSRP, then, I don't know what year it was discontinued). It originally was a cheapened up 336 CS(carbine forend) but I've seen them with both the rifle forend(cap) and carbine style forend(barrel band) so they varied a bit. They changed the wood, the front sight didn't have the ramp, it was just dovetailed into the barrel(actually I like that better from an aesthetic point of view personally) and the rear sight was a cheap stamped affair. There may have been a little less polish to the bluing as well. Nothing wrong with the gun that a better rear sight can't fix but unless it was in pristine condition, I wouldn't go over $200 and even then, not much over. In my part of the country, it's not difficult pick up a nice used(85%+) 336 for less than $250 with a little shopping and with judicious shopping, $200. Prices can vary quite a bit by region though.
