30-30 ammo

Post by Dyerbill »

Can someone help me out............... how come the Federal power-shok are so much cheaper $7.99 per 20 rds. vs.Winchester power-point $13.99 per 20rds.
Also Cabelas sold out of the 150 grain to the box and has lots of 170 grain.

By the way I have a Marlin 30AS.

I believe it cause your not paying for the winchester name...I shoot lots of the federal blue box ammo..It's accurate and kills deer and hogs just as good..in fact the most accurate load for my .270 is 130gr federal blue box ammo...

Dyerbill,

Welcome to the forum.

I think Savage99 has it pretty much right. Although our ISP news page just had an article about Winchester getting a multi billion military ammo contract. So they may be concentrating on that and scrimping on commercial ammo.

The wierd thing is that a local gun shop has the Federal for 13.95 and the Winchester for 19.95. 150gr 30-30 ammo.

That's a bit steep for me.

I've bought one box of ammo in 10 years that was 2 years ago and it was 150gr federals, very accurate!

Considering todays prices, If I did not handload I'd get as much as I could afford at $7.99 a box.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

The Federal is the best in my 30-30.

I am loathe to call the Federal "cheap" stuff, as that price variance exists around where I shop also and can find no valid reason for it; unless it's just the "brand name" thing. Wal-Mart used to carry the Federals, but all I've seen recently has been Winchester & Remington. I actually prefer the Federals, finding its performance on deer 100%. In addition, in reloading custom ammo, I've found their brass is more consistent than either Winchester or Remington.

My son-in-law reloads shotgun shells by the hundreds of pounds worth, buys a lot of powder and primers from a big seller of those components. I was able to place an order along with his big order recently, for those Federals in 170 grain Power Shocks for 7.55 or 7.65 a box, I broke down and shot the works on 40 boxes at such a price, and no tax either. I saw them right after that at a big store in my town for 15.99 for the 150 grainers. Blue boxes look ok to me, I like the green still in my pocket. Bruce

Right around deer season our wally-world sets out the blue-box Federals at 9.99. Being as I do not reload yet, I should have emptied the shelf.

The only time I have bought a box of factory ammo in the last 5 years has been when I wanted to try out a new bullet in my varmint rigs to see if the barrels like the bullet. But at $7.99 a box it is a good time to buy and build up that brass supply. If you add in the cost of buying new brass adn the rest fo the components it is danged near a wash. Where can I go clean em out?

I was thinking the same thing..tomorrow I'm going to cabelas to buy several blue boxes of .30-30...

just out of curisoty I checked out federals web site..they actually list .375H&H under there powershock line-up..and several of there powershock offerings are list as class 3 ammo..meaning big-and dangerous game..

I read somewhere (I think it was a reliable source too) that Federal brass not as good as Winchester brass. When I reloaded lots of 45ACP for IPSC many years ago I found that definitely to be the case. Anybody any info/experience regarding brass longevity of Fed vs. Win vs Rem?After reading that I quit buying the Federal stuff when I was buying primarily to get brass and some quick, lazy shooting.
