OT - Ruger SP101 Overcharge

I still weigh every charge. The process of "Throwing" charges scares me to death. I don't know how you guys do it.

I load with a single throw rock chucker and I visually look to see my powder charges are all the same heighth before seating the bullet. In a progressive, or loading singely, I could see if you don't check it that could happen real easily.

I use the same method as kimwcook .
One needs to develop a technique to be able to drop consistant charges with powder measures. They drop by volume and require that they are handled the same each time.
A friend loaded several cases of trap loads on his new progressive loader once only to find many were bloopers because he got to going too fast and the charge bar didn`t have time to fill properly.
I charge all cases weighing every tenth or so (when loading near max). Inspect for level of all charges. put the powder away and then seat all bullets.

I have my old Rockchucker and use it for my rifle rounds and weigh each charge. For handguns I use a Dillon, but I do inspect each charge making sure it is at the right level before setting a bullet. I also weigh about every twenty or so to make sure it is throwing consistent charges. Slows down the process but I'm in no hurry.
I must admit when I first started loading I let a squib (no powder) get by me and lodged a bullet in my then new Series 70 Colt. It has never happened again!

I really want to know what the pressure on the 16gr LilGun/180gr WFN is generating...

It barks - loud - from my 2.5" 101, but it's not outrageous...

Then again, I don't find a 31gr H110 .454 load outrageous...

I check the first 10 or so loads after a new setup and then every 5th or so, even on a progressive machine. I caught a double charge that way once on my Lee Pro 1000. Something didn't feel QUITE right, so I checked. It was my fault, as I had just checked a charge and hadn't got everything back just so - I probably put the case back in the wrong station.

With single stage presses, I use loading blocks and check every 10th charge or so, unless I'm developing new loads, in which case every charge gets weighed. I also check the OAL on virtually every load, especially if they are up near max gross weight.

It's sometimes quite surprising how much starting loads and max loads vary by manual. If I have 5 manuals with a big spread 'tween the different starting loads, I'll throw out the high and low and start with the average of the remainder. I've never had a problem that way - your mileage may vary, of course.

When I leave a powder measure or progressive press set up, I'll put a slip of paper in the powder hopper with the type of powder written on it. When I get back to loading, I'll ALWAYS throw a couple of charges to check the weight. No paper in the hopper? Right into the compost pile. I lost a bit of (I think!) 231 that way, but it's better than trashing a gun, eh?

+1 on the 2400 & Unique.I use a single stage lyman,weigh my charges and double visual check charges in the cases.After weigh of powder and before seating bullet.
