Marlin 338MX on the way !

Post by 6pt-sika »

Talked with one of the dealers I do most of my buisness with today !

He told me he had a 338 Marlin Express coming for me in the 338MX version (22" blued and walnut) !

Price is $539 plus tax and the $2 for the state police . So OTD is $567.95 !

He also ordered me a couple boxes of the Hornady LE ammo for about $28 a box !

I would say all I need now is a set of dies . But I have TWO sets of dies for my pair of 308 Marlin Express rifles and I have yet to load any ammunition for either rifle !

Think this time I'll wait for dies until Redding or RCBS have them out for sale !

My dealer got this one from Accusport ! You might get a local dealer in your area to try them as he said they had 25 more on their webpage when he ordered mine !

Should be in to my dealer in the next 7-10 days , as he wanted to add some other stuff to the order .

But I doubt if I see ammo for a couple weeks at least ! I know Natchez has ammo in stock , but the shipping costs for 3 boxes of ammo was about $6 per box . So I'll wait for the ammo until my dealer can get it !

They kinda screwed me up getting them out this early as I was expecting them in mid year !

And figured I had plenty time to get money together for both versions .

The 338MXLR is also out ! There are a couple guys on Marlinowners who already have them coming as well !

My dealer told me when he could get a 338MXLR it would be $700-710 plus tax and $2 for the call in . So OTD at $710 would be $757.50 . I see where my income tax refund is going

I received a Hornady advertisement DVD last week with all their new products.

They show the 338 on there. They talk about all the downrange thump it has, and by what I could see, the reverse was true at the shooter's end also. Doesn't seem it will be all bad if your used to shooting 336EER's in .356 winchester.

Not whining, just reporting what I observed.

I recieved there DVD this week as well !

As for recoil I already have a couple of the Marlin 336ER's in 356 WIN and the recoil with them is nothing in my opinion . So if the 338 Marlin Express is in the same ballpark it won't be a problem !

Although I've not seen the 338MX I ordered yet !

I did hear from another on Marlinowners who had one come in to his dealers yesterday . He went to pick it up today and turned it down !

He said the rifle looked as if it were one of the ones they had used to field test the round at the range or possibly hunted .

He said the stock had a few nicks straight from the box , the loading gate had a fair amount of copper on it , the top of the reciever had marks like one gets after having a scope mounted for awhile and on top of all this he said the barrel was way way dirtier then a new rifle should be !

Also said he left it for his dealer to send back or sell to someone else !

I hope mine doesn't look this way

I told my dealer today to get me one. He didn`t know they were building a .338 but had a pile of 2009 Marlin catalogs on the counter so I showed it to him. :D He is a good guy but cant keep up with everything. :D

I think Zanders had a bunch in stock, at least they did yesterday. They were the blued models. I would want a MXLR myself. Saw an article in AR today about the gun/caliber. They said it was based on the 376 Steyr, but if you look at the dimensions, you could cut down a 45-70 about 3/16th of an inch, neck it for .338 bullets and turn the rim down about .055" or so and add a groove for the extractor and have the 338 Marlin. Can you say re-bore to .358 Marlin express or .375 Marlin express"" :D How about a .416 Marlin express and have the bore size about .411 to use 405 Win bullets :D :D

The MX is the one I like, moreso than the XLR.

BTW - The latest issue of Handloader Magazine wrings out the .338 ME, and the Marlin rifles chambered for it - and mentioned that anyone with .308 ME dies can easily use them to load the .338.

How do you use a .308 caliber sizing die on a .338 caliber?

MY bad, Ted ! I don't know where I saw THAT little tidbit.

Thinking further, I don't see how - since the two also use two different basic cases sizes.

BTW:

First - The "wring out" article by Aaron Carter was in the Feb 2009 American Rifleman, there being no .338ME article in Handgunner (yet), (Doh ! )

Second - G&A also had a .338ME article by Craig Boddington in their Feb 2009 issue .
