I saw one of these at a gun show yesterday. It was a "Classic" with the pistol grip, shortened magazine tube and steel butt plate. Looked about 98%. The old boy who had it was asking $749.00. I was tempted but passed. Did I screw up by passing?

Oh Yeah, you did !
A Classic Model isn't just "any" 9422 - it's a quite rare model that was made for only two years in LR & WRM.
The fit/finish/polish/blue were a step above every other 9422 made at the time, and on a par with a presentation rifle - although without overly fancy wood.
A 100% example is worth $1K - $1200 today, easily.
I sold two NIB examples to gun show dealers, both more than six years ago, for over $700 each, at that time.

Re: 9422LR "Classic"
I think I'm gonna puke.
Re: 9422LR "Classic"
I have 5 of these early classics. Pete is correct as they were manf. only 2 years 1985-1987 and they have the 23-1/2"barrels with pistol grip stock. These early ones were sure finished nice.

Re: 9422LR "Classic"
I have the contact info on the guy who had this rifle. If he still has it should it be bought for $749.00? Is that about the going rate?
Re: 9422LR "Classic"
Check the serial number etc. to make sure it is the first issue of the Classic. If it is the later Classics issued then it is a toss up. It will depend on overall condition, bbl. length, type of buttplate etc. Good Luck

Re: 9422LR "Classic"
AFAIK, there was only a single issue of the Classic, 1985-1987.
The "other" Classic was a Legacy 9422, and IIRC, so marked - IMHO with nowhere near the fit/finish/wood of the 9422 Classic.
