Marlin 57M lever ?
What can you guys tell me about the Marlin 57M ? I have a chance to pick one up, and was wondering what the ball park value would for one in excellent shape. I am not familiar with this model at all, how was the quality ?

Excellent, As New condition? Under $400 would be a fantastic value. $400-$450 would be fair.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: Marlin 57M lever ?
Anyone else have some input on this model ? Thanks
Re: Marlin 57M lever ?
They have the one piece stock with the pistol grip and curved lever. A very quality rifle and one I pass up from time to time. (timings never right--either I just bought something else or I'm not in the mood.
) As you know, the 57M is for the magnums and the regular 57 is for .22 s,l, and lr. I just looked in the book and they were made from 1959-1965 which is not a long time..
The new Blue Book has 'em priced at
70%--$150
80%--$200
90%--$250
95%--$300
100% new and unfired--$400
My father in law was a butcher and he used a Winchester Model 72 .22 LR for regular steers, but the big bulls always caught a bullet from a Marlin 57M.
If you got the bucks and a whim for a new toy, go ahead and get it.

Re: Marlin 57M lever ?
I had Marlin levermatics in 22 lr and in 30 carbine. Long since traded away now but I did like them for the super short throw and quick reloading of magazines. They mount scopes very nicely and found them to be a natural pointer. I never did get either of mine to shoot as well as I thought they should. Admittedly the 22 had been neglected before I owned it and the bore was r-o-u-g-h! I kroiled - bronze brushed the crud out of it followed by lightly polishing with bore paste on a tight patch but couldn't bring the micor-groove accuracy back.
All I shot in the 30 carbine was fmj stuff (mondo cheap to shoot back then)
. These 2 factors are most likely why groups were less then satisfactory. I did like the novelty of the actions though. If the rifle is in good condition I'd think you'd like it.
