Ummmm, uh, oh kay ...... now I am curious. Something DIFFERENT and interesting but still a lever gun. No doubt it will be priced way out of my reach, but I can still slobber on the key board.

Perhaps someone read my comments back in November.

Not knowing much about the Colt Burgess rifles, to me it looks like a sturdy well designed gun.
Does it have faults? If not, would it be hard or too expensive to reproduce perhaps in Italy?
Seeing how many fine old designs are recreated there, I think that one would find a market if it was priced right and reliable.
Thanks for posting, it's got me daydreaming about firearms again!!!!

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
Ooooo, I may have to get one of those. I have a book covering the Burgess patent guns. I recall the author saying the Colt was not terribly reliable. Perhaps Uberti will make some needed changes. It's basically the 1881 Marlin scaled down to pistol length cartridges.
Uberti is quite welcome to start making thin frame 1881's any time they want!

Now you're talking! I wish Uberti would make both versions of the 1881 Marlin! A .45-70 and a .38-55 would be great for those who want a 1881, but can't afford the originals.

A fellow at CAScity has posted pictures and a few comments on the Burgess he handled before the SHOT show. Cimarron will be carrying them.

The Colt Burgess shares some of the innards with that other (in)famous piece, the Lightning rifle. I just hope it doesn't share the notorious lack of reliability the Lightning clones have demonstrated.

Wasn't the Colt pretty much a scaled sown 1881?marlinman93 wrote:Now you're talking! I wish Uberti would make both versions of the 1881 Marlin! A .45-70 and a .38-55 would be great for those who want a 1881, but can't afford the originals.

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
From what I've seen, they seemed to share enough in common that I'm suprised Marlin didn't sue Colt back then!
I hope they offer this new Burgess clone in a blued receiver like the original Burgess was! That chemical striped case color looks hideous to me! Looks like they tried to copy old Stevens case, but at an angle. Just doesn't look like a real Burgess with their nicely rust blued finish.

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
Please tell me more. I have read the Colt Burgess had reliability problems. My belongings arrive tomorrow, so that book may resurface soon on my new bookshelves, but I recall the author didn't mention what exactly were the problems. Uberti has been willing to tinker a bit with the older designs, and hopefully they will make some adjustments to this one.adirondakjack wrote:The Colt Burgess shares some of the innards with that other (in)famous piece, the Lightning rifle.
Perhaps Marlin hadn't purchased exclusive rights to Burgess's patent. I believe he patented it before there was a business relationship with Marlin. From what I've seen, they seemed to share enough in common that I'm suprised Marlin didn't sue Colt back then!
Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
Anyone happen to know if the Colt Burgess had the same issues with the forestock cracking as the Marlin 1881 had?

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
Yep, same sliding Burgess magazine gate, and same issue with cracked forearms. But just like the 1881 Marlin, it probably wont happen in our lifetimes. I'm pretty sure 1881's didn't crack for generations of use.Killer Kanuck wrote:Anyone happen to know if the Colt Burgess had the same issues with the forestock cracking as the Marlin 1881 had?

Re: Uberti colt burgess rifle
I was able to dig out the book I have (by one S. Maxwell) which covers the guns based on Burgess's patents. These include the 1881 Marlin and the Colt, Kennedy, and Whitney leverguns.
He didn't comment favorably on the Colt, which uses the same basic lock up of the 1881 Marlin. He notes it was prone to gathering debris in the ejection port, and it lacked a trigger safety which prevented firing before the action was locked (a feature introduced on the 73 Win.). It was more prone to jamming and to internal breakages than its competitors, but he didn't indicate if this was a night and day difference. He also said it was difficult to field strip.
Some of these will be inherent in the design, but hopefully Uberti will have tweaked the internals a bit to improve feeding and the strength of internal parts.
