OT- Nickle plated lead shot

Post by cutter »

I have been offered an 11lb bag of #6 lead shot at a low price, but have a couple of concerns.

Is this safe to fire in a gun not proofed for steel shot?
Why would one want to use nickle plated shot?

Yes plated shot is almost as soft as the hardest lead shot and won`t damage any gun barrel. Loaded in a shot cup wad it don`t even touch the barrel.
What kind of shotgun do you have?
Plated shot is a little harder so it won`t deform as much on firing and will give better paterns.

Why 1897's ,of course.
Eventually a reproduction 87, as soon as they bring out a longer barrel length.

Thanks for the info , sir.

We use nickel plated # 6 shot when loading for Non-ATA trapshooting "games" and competitive live bird shooting which often require very long shots. 1 1/4 oz. loaded over a 3 1/4 dram eq. powder charge makes a great long-range load which patterns better than regular lead shot and is more effective on targets and live pigeons. That shot, especially in a one piece plastic wad, won't hurt your gun at all. Might be an excellent anti-personnel choice for very close ( e.g.: inside the home) rounds.

Plated lead shot is safe. Plating is done to make the shot slicker, to help improve patterns. The shot slides against each other more, rather than mushing and deforming.
