I just saw a CB Marlin 45-70

I thought the cowboy 45-70 was cool.I like the full lengeth Magazine is awesome. You never know when you will shoot a herd of buffalo. Its kinda light for a 45-70.Is it a 26" barrel?it needs a recoil pad for sure.I just had a 45-70 that was bought out of my hands it was $400.Good buys go quick.

26" I love mine. I had the stock cut and a good pad put on; anything more than cowboy loads were a bit harsh for me. With a Marbles Tanger and the WWG Happy Trigger, this is the best shooter I have. If you can find another, jump right on it, you won't be sorry.

I love mine. I don`t shoot many full power loads but for hunting they do not bother me at all. I do shoot lots of low powered cast loads and the Cowboy is a very accurate and fun rifle. Enjoy!

Grizz loads some 525s to 1300 some fps and about 27,000..they are fairly mild and penetrate 12 gal milkjugs of water (Grizz, did I lie? ) You don't need to punish yourself to have a superior hunting round.

Guys,

I don't have a 45-70, but it's me too on the eyes watering thing if I shoot more than about 20 of my 300 or 330 gr T4 loads at the same setting if those loads are above 1900 fps. I think ScottT is on to something with his big/slow loads. While Scott shoots a 500+ gr postel with BP in his Sharps at about 1100 fps, IIRC, I"m gonna find the sweet spot for my T4 and 405s in the big/slow category. If the 405 cain't kill it, I won't shoot it here in central Texas cause its critter more than I got courage to face down. I just need enough velocity for DRT, not DRT times 2 or 3!

I wish they made in shorter barreled versions. It's pretty, but too long and heavy IMO.

The 405 grain Remington factory loads have no recoil to speak of.

I like the cowboy models as well. My .38-55 and .45-70 cowboys are superior shooters. I like the longer barrels. Great for offhand shooting. I want a .30-30 version. Thanks. 1886.

Had a 1895CB for a few years now . It was the second Marlin I ever bought .

Thing can be a little stout with heavy cast and full bore loads . However I do not think it is bad enough to need a recoil pad

45-70

Post by dgr416 »

I think its the coolest 45-70 besides a 1886 Winchester. It even looks old.It has a very light colored stock. Is it as strong as the other 45-70 Marlins.I wonder if it would do good with lever evolution loads? It seemed light to me.It was $600 not too bad I guess.

I saw a CB in .45-70 in the gun shop a couple of days ago priced at $ 695.00 Don't know if that's a fair price or not.

45-70

I can probally get this 45-70 cowboy for $500 if I buy the 220 swift with it.It hard to decide too many good buys .I should have bought the 45-70 for $400 also.It was snapped out of my hands.

COWBOY RIFLES

Post by blueroan »

I've got 2 45/70 Cowboy Rifles and one of the LTD? with an octagon barrel and pistol grip. Love 'em!

Don't hold your breath on a 30/30 Cowboy! I've seen 3. Missed the first one when I went back next day. The second was $150 higher at the local scalper with all the exotic stuff. The third was NIB for $400--someone was asleep at the switch--and it went into layaway for two weeks. When the 30/30 gets mentioned, I always get an offer sight unseen

I wish Marlin would bring back the 30/30 Cowboy with 24 or 26 inch octagon barrel, the 24 inch length in the 1894s, and go back to drilling and tapping the receiver for the excellent Lyman #66 series sights. Drill and tap the tang for the Lyman or Marbles tang sights too!
