Feeling Bad, put my partner down today:(

Post by TX50Cal »

I had to put my 6 year old Rat Terrier "Lakota" down today. What really hurts is that she was healthy. A few months ago she started getting aggressive, attacking the 2 smaller dogs, my wife, my kids. Not all the time, just every now and then. Final straw was when she bit at my 9year old son just under the eyebrow the other night. hate to think what would have happened if it were 1/4" lower. But she was a good dog and friend and we will miss her terribly. Don't know why I posted this but I guess I just needed to get it off my chest.

Well, I believe you've done the responsible thing. I also don't believe it would have been right to pawn the problem off on someone else. We have a rat terrier that's about 11 years old but he's still very good natured and is "Momma's pride and joy (if you don't count our real kids). I hate to think what it would be like if we had to put him down. We also have a 14 y.o. lab who's getting in bad shape. He's got bad hips and just lays around most of the time, but he always seems to be in good spirits. We just hate the thought of putting him down; the kids will really torn up about it, but it will need to be done soon.

My BIL and his wife had to put down a dog that went mental on them like that. It is never fun. Our condolences to your entire family.

You made the right decision Dave, but I know that doesn't make you feel any better about the loss. You and your family have my sympathy.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm betting that Lakota is waiting for you, full of love and forgiveness at the Rainbow Bridge.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old
are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed
are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them
in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content,
except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them,
who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent.
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

We had to do this a couple of years ago with a dog we adopted that proved to be very aggressive -- too much so for the humane society to accept her. I felt like such a heel, but I know it was the right thing to do, and the vet absolutely agreed. Glad your family is OK.

Stupid dogs... You did the right thing. We had to put down our 4 year old Rex a couple of years ago, cancer got him. There wasn't a possum, raccoon, skunk or UPS guy that could get close to the house without him letting us know. Still miss him. Stupid dogs...

I bet ya dollars to donuts your pup may have been starting to get sick... lots of times they will shift personality way before symptoms appear. Not that that helps ... you probably did the right thing'

Some of the hybrid dogs are prone to 'going bad' and there's not anything I know of that will stop it.

You acted like a man, which is often times difficult and unpleasant, but a man makes these decisions anyway. No dog, no matter how much a part of a family, is the equivalent of a child (goes for all other pets as well); you did the right thing.

If you are feeling loss for a dog, what does that make you? It makes you a compassionate and empathetic soul. One that when faced with a difficult decision, he takes the path to protect his family, yet express sorrow and loss for the life of a pet.

There is one thing I learned from observing life: That the only portal where God's compassion can enter the physical world and be expressed in flesh, is through the heart of Mankind. There is no other practitioner of compassion and empathy in the universe, other than God and Man, so you are doing quite well.

My sincere condolences. This is something that sometimes must be done. We dealt with this not too long ago, when a dog knocked an elderly relative, who lived in the same household, out of the way to try to attack this relative's smaller dog. (No, this is not the wonderful dog we lost in October.) Before this, the "bad" dog had taken to stealing food from this same elderly relative's hands or plate. It appeared that this dog, a strong "alpha" female, was treating this elderly relative, and a ten-year-old child, as being beneath her in the pack order, and felt that it was OK to use force against them.

A dear friend dealt with an incident that resulted one or two of her dogs having to be put down, after they killed a fairly new dog. She was a locally well-known dog trainer and was involved in canine search and recovery.

Dogs are generally man's best friends, but sometimes, certain ones have issues, and we, as pack leaders, must do what we are compelled to do. You have my empathy, sympathy, and prayers.

Sorry to hear about it, but what you did was probably the kindest thing you could do. Unfortunately sometimes the complex wiring in a living creature's head gets a short somewhere in it and they are not the same person they were. When that happens, whether they are human or not, the personality change which is forced on them usually makes them hate who they have become. I believe dogs have intelligence, and your friend probably is in heaven now thanking you for ending his torment.
