My 7 year old taking a turkey - neat action pics

Post by Bitmap »

We were waiting for a deer a couple of weeks ago and my 7yo just couldn't resist the urge when a bunch of turkey landed around us.

Here are a couple of likely dinners.

Great - way to go dad! A great experience for him. Really good to see guys out hunting with their kids. I'm taking m two boys in a couple of weeks - the next Texas Agelina NF hunt get-together - this one's a campout! :)

Oh, and just curious, what's the load you're using for deer? .223's are used often in Texas - especially for women and younger shooters but also by some old salts who use em to take neck shots.

The 60 grain Nosler Part is a favorite bullet.

It's a 7.62x39 using Winchester Power Point 123gr. factory loads. I don't use a .223 where I hunt because the deer get big sometimes. Check out my post on the 7yo shooting his first deer. That mulie was fairly small, probably 150 lbs on the hoof.

Yes, he does. Fairly light recoil. Nice sight. The Magpul CTR stock can be set to a short LOP for him and it locks in place so it doesn't rattle and make noise. I like the CTR, too, because when I want to shoot it I can make it long enough for me. I wish it was a flat-top but that's what I've got and I'm stuck with it for now.

Good job! That turkey's about as big as your boy.

Congrats!

RE the 223... I use 63 semi points and 62 tsx. In 223. The 62 tsx will run lengthwise through an average deer, say 150 pounds, and usually exit.... its not a neck only gun. Especially when the neck is a riskier target than the head is actually. Rib shots will kill em all day long with either bullet or the 60 partition. But I digress.

Neat set of pics.
