do coyotes see orange?

Post by El Chivo »

I'm thinking about hunting coyote in the off-season.

Can I wear the orange or do I need to invest in some camo?

Coyotes are pretty much color blind. That's why a red-filtered spotlight works so well. Camo does not matter near as much as being still.

I have never worn orange while coyote hunting. 20cows has got it right about not moving, really not moving at all. Now shooting coyotes as targets of oppourtunity is different you need to move fast to get your rifle out of the truck and get that shot off before the coyote is in the next county.

My dogs don't see blaze orange (the camo variety anyway). I've hidden next to a fir tree, partially exposed and had them run right by me (withing a couple of yards) looking for me. They won't let me out of their sight for very long. Coyotes should be the same.

Coyotes see orange as a yellow. It will blend in a wheat field but stands out in green foliage which appears white to grayish to a coyote. The important thing is to break up the pattern. and maybe not have a solid orange. There is "camo" orange out there which is orange broken up by black streaks. Along with this, you have to remain VERY still if have you use it. Coyotes see color different from deer, so what works for deer does not always work for coyotes.

Last weekend I had a coyote walk by me at about 40 yards. I was deer hunting and I was decked out in orange as required by law. I remained still and she never knew I was there.

FWIW, my dog will see a colored toy I throw better than a stick I pick up.....

Well of course all animals see colors, its just not the ones we see or as many of them. For instance, to some green and white both appear white. That's why it's important to remain motionless so they have a harder time detecting one object from another or what it is. Some people talk like if a yote can't see certain colors that the object is invisible. It does not see a people shape invisible hole in space.

What coyotes will see is patterns and movement. If you're wearing an orange vest it is a large solid shape, and when you move even slightly it will be seen. The color doesn't matter, so if you break it up with a pattern or wear camo orange, then they wont get your outline as easily.

As of right now, California does not require Orange for any type of hunting.

When I go coyote hunting, I go in what I've got on when I decide to go. Most times when I decide to go coyote hunting, I'm in town or out and about and don't have time to go home for Camo, etc..

I always carry a rifle and a shotgun in my truck and some other gear -- an electronic coyoted caller among them. I got rid of my .223 some time ago and now-a-days the rifle I carry in my truck all the time is a scoped .30-06 . That's a lot of gun for a coyote but it keeps me in form for other hunting.

EDIT: Like someone said above -- the key to coyote hunting is to keep still and not worry too much about what you've got on.

If you have not, take a look at Predator Xtreme --- http://www.predatorxtreme-digital.com/p ... 0810/?pg=1

Click CONTENTS .. then THE EYES HAVE IT -- then use the "next page" arrows to scroll through the article.

This is part of a series on how coyotes see and what they see. It is the best I have seen on the subject.
