What is the bore diameter of a 38-55 ?

Post by BenT »

I checked with Numrich today on their 38-55 octagon barrel that is threaded and reamed for a 94 win. Since no bore diameter was listed I asked and the gal said .369 bore. I also checked on the 38-55 barrel on sale at Buffalo arms and no bore diameter is listed.
Now I want to shoot both cast and jacked bullets. So .369 seems a little small to shoot .375 jacketed bullets in. So I'm looking for clarification. Thanks.

Ben T, I just used a micrometer on my 26" octagon Numerich barrel .369. My 1896 vintage Winchester 1894 comes away with .370. These measurements are by micrometer. This is not slugging the barrel, but a quick reference. I just put a new Ultramax cast bullet into the bore. .072 was between the end of the cartridge case and the end of the bore. Using this cast bullet .377. I have had this barrel for a long forgotten project and would gladly sell this barrel to you or anyone else needing a new old stock 38-55 Numerich barrel for a Winchester 94.

I would be interested in it if the .375 jacketed bullets are O. K. to be used in this bore. I'll wait till I can get more info from this thread.

Bore or groove diameter? Bore might be .369... If it slugs .377 you're good to hook.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Big Bore , I figure .369 bore makes sense if grooves are .003 deep that would put it at .375.

I shoot a Winchester Crazy Horse in 38-55. It slugged at .378. I shoot beartooth bullets at .379, 265 grainers.

I think .375's are usually .375 or real close, but .38-55's are likely to be .378 or bigger.

The original Winchesters had a groove diameter closer to .380. I have two. A rifle made in 1899 has a groove diameter of .382 and a SRC made in 1907 has a groove diameter of .379.

my crazy horse has a bore of .373" and groove of .380". it is unbelievable how 38-55's run all over the place.
