OT - it sucks when this happens

Post by bsaride »

Anyone else have this happen to them?

This has happened before to me and I'm getting tired of it.

I sit here, either late at night or early in the morning, nursing my coffee.
I spend five to ten minutes writing a long response. When I submit my
response it POOFs into nothingness and I never see it again. Guess what
you don't see it either because it's frusterating and I'm not wasting my
time retyping it in the mood I'm in after it happens.

I would like to have a moderator look into this.

Frusterated and goin to get another cuppa joe....

If you're starting a post and don't have anything in the subject line it happens too.

It happens to me when I take a really long time to type a response. After 2-3 days, something is bound to go wrong.

Ok, so it only happens to me when I do something wrong. Not sitting in your lap watching you post and thus lacking detail, I'm afraid I can't help you. Give me details and we'll see what we can do.
Sincerely,

Hobie

I type real slow, kinda the same way I think, if I'm going to type up a long post I do it in word or notepad and then copy and paste it over so that doesn't happen or, if it does I still have a copy to try again.

I don't do anything different than shorter posts.

I have noticed that when it happens there is someone elses post in the discussion.
Might be that they are trying to post at the same time and I'm the one who gets dropped.

Sometimes when I post I'll think it's posted but the text just gets bumped up to the preview box. So if I go back to the forum page, poof it's gone. So I have to double check to make sure it's not in the preview page before I go somewhere else.
Usually that happens if someone else posts at the same time I do.

if I use my back button before submitting it, I lose it.

If I have something long I will sometimes copy it to clipboard periodically.

Type your reply in Microsoft word. You can use spellchecker etc etc. Then copy and paste it directly into the post reply box for the forum.

It used to happen a couple times a week when I had a different internet provider. Never happened after changing my service a few years ago.

I cheat. I write into an email I send to myself which also lets me spell check. Then I copy paste it into the forum.

Two things I've picked up out of the thread and I want to highlight for you:

1. If you copy a long post and THEN post it you'll have a copy to fall back on if something goes wrong.

2. You're noticing that this often happens when someone else has posted between when you started and when you finished. You need to pay attention when that happens - when it happens to me I get a message informing of the fact that someone else already replied and do I want to continue posting or amend what I typed. In that case I need to click "Submit Post" again and have to scroll down to do so. In other words, look carefully at the resulting page after you submit the post and see what it's telling you.

Like Hobie said, it's hard to tell what's going on in each case. Not only do different folks use different browsers, they also set their browsers up differently and have different habits in how they do things. Each variable can make for different results in one way or another.

But for long posts that you've spent time working on - copy that text before you submit it. It saves a lot of frustration. Don't ask me how I know...

I've had this happen on other forums as well. That suggest it's not anything directly caused by this forum.

I also use the copy function to save the long post in case it happens.

I use IEspellcheck so that I can check spelling right in the post box and not have to use e mail and take several extra steps.

Hope this goes through !!!!!!!!!!!!

Even easier (not to mention more secure, etc) would be to use one of the Mozilla Firefox or Seamonkey browsers. They have BUILT IN spell check. :) And are more secure and less prone to be hacked, hijacked and such than IE is... Shucks, I believe even the Opera browser has spell check built in...
