OT - My New Toy. (pic)

Post by cshold »

Don’t laugh to hard guys, sure wouldn’t want anyone to hurt themselves.
Still trying to figure out exactly why I did this.
(All right I admit it, I got bored with the whole HD thing)
So I sold my perfectly good 06 HD Dyna Super Glide for this 09 Vespa GTV.
This little thing is a flat out blast to ride, and 70 mpg to boot. :D

Put a big leather scabbard on it and slip in a .45-70, and it will look just right...

I was thinking of getting one. No, you can't beat the mileage and for around town, it is just the ticket. Compare it to a full-size PU, ummm, might pay for itself.

Good on you!! I got my Burgman last May and have only driven my 3/4 ton 4x4 Ram to work three times since then. The fuel savings is paying for the scoot. Here's a picture...

btw, mine only gets 55mpg, but it'll do over 100mph and my wife and I cruise everywhere with it :D

the date on the picture is wrong by the way :o

Ain't a thing wrong with that.

I bought my wife this one on Valentines Day. I got rid of the front US DOT lights and hooked up the euro lights, then removed all the goofy looking decals, and now it looks pretty nifty.

It's the Aprilia Mojito Custom

My wife and daughter love it. I bet I've put close to 400 miles on it myself.

This one is a 150cc and will easily get up to 70mph. :o

This is what I'm thinkin:

Yamaha TW200 (I tried to post a pic but it gave me the o'l red ex box).

Anyway, its good lookin and it gets 8 more MPG than the scooters. 78 MPG if Yamaha can be believed :D

The only problem that I can see is the little bitty 1.8 gal gas tank which limits you to 140 miles. But then, maybe that's all you can stand before needing to stop!

Seriously, this would be a local thing only.

Unless times get really bad and I need to use it for business travel and sleep in a tent at rest stops! Then, I'd need a little trailer and could carry a small gas can ;)

Ah - found a pic of the Yamaha TW200 that I can post - 78 MPG:

Image

Won't even touch 2ndovc's KLR650 for performance but it'll do the highway and around town just fine.

They don't list the cruising speed or top speed or acceleration though....

I know that my little TTR125 is plenty peppy enough but it's top end and cruise speeds aren't up to the highway.

Yep - 4 cyle engine - nice and quiet - the antithesis of the loud Harley. And I like the phat wheels :)

My little TTR125 is a lot of fun too - but hard to convert to street use and just too little for any highway use. But it runs like a champ - its a 4 cycle too. I've got a TTR90 as well and it runs great too. Going to sell these I think and maybe buy the TW200. Or maybe just pay off the house remodel/expansion loan overage

I like the looks of this over the scooters for sure though.

But, to each his own. The scooters have their advantages - look to hold a second rider a bit easier for example. and they come with the storage things.

But I wonder if the TW200 could pull a small trailer? Probably asking too much of it...

This is what I was thinking of -

Image

That'd make a fine grocery hauler or gun range rig :)

The biggest sales promo ever was Hollywood.
In 1952, Audrey Hepburn side-saddled Gregory Peck's Vespa in the film
Roman Holiday for a ride through Rome, resulting in over 100,000 sales.
In 1956, John Wayne dismounted his horse in favor of the two-wheeler
to originally get between takes on sets.
By the end of the fifties, Lucia Bosé and her husband, the matador
Luis Miguel Dominguín, as well as Marlon Brando, Dean Martin,
and the entertainer Abbe Lane had become Vespa owners.
William Wyler filmed Ben Hur in Rome in 1959, allowing Charlton Heston
to abandon horse and chariot between takes to take a spin on the Vespa.

I don't care for the tiny tires on scooters. Local dealer had a bunch of used ones in from a delivery service company that was redoing their fleet and we thought about it. 150 CC's but that'd mean having to pay yearly tax on it. The darling wife picked up a Honda Biz 100CC rig (thanks to the guys on http://www.sixshootercommunity.com) and I picked up this one:

Image

2005 Suzuki GN125H 87.5 MPG and 63.75 MPH on a recent trip to Cali. That's top speed on the MPH by the way, as registered by the GPS trip meter. I think I got that on a downhill with a tailwind. Average speed for the trip was closer to 45 mph, but a lot of it was through various towns and on hills - which the 12 Shetland ponies of power it has don't handle very well at top speed. :D But it's got 16 inch rims and handles about any kind of terrain I face down here. It's too small for long trips with two people, but does OK around town for running errands and such. The mileage is from the same trip, it can do better but not with the accelerator cranked clear to the stop 99% of the time... :D

The best part is - it ALMOST looks "manly" to ride... I'll be taking it to Bogotá in a few weeks, the Good Lord willing. About a seven hour trip (at least that's what it took me last time) I'd prefer a 250, but 125's don't pay taxes here and 250's cost more than double. In fact, a GS 500 wouldn't cost but about $500 or so more than a 250 would - and provide much more oomph on the uphills as well.

And that's the beauty of the GN 125. It's been out so long most of the kinks have been worked out. It's a solid bike and does great duty around town - and over our low speed highways. It'll get me where I need to go and do so economically. We don't pay tolls for motorcycles here so I can travel anywhere I want for the cost of fuel. :) I think that with the current situation in the US that Suzuki could do a good business in such bikes up there should they choose to do so. They present a more palatable choice to many than the "girly" style of scooter and are good enough for around town use. Add a trunk on the rear and a net for the back seat and you can carry a surprising amount of groceries back there. And maintenance is easy as well. I've got over 11,000 km (close to 7,000 miles) on mine and have done nothing except change oil, clean, tighten and lube the chain and adjust the timing chain once. Over all, I'm tickled pink with it. I'd prefer a larger bike, but can't swing the huge price difference. And the only thing a larger bike would give me would be better performance on certain highways - roads I rarely ride. The smaller bike's actually more agile around town and gets me through traffic with ease.
